David never saw it coming when Luke showed up. One look at the guy and David could already tell, Luke was into Ella. It was obvious.
Luke was really interested in her.
Ella glanced over at David, then turned to Luke. “Luke, would you mind giving us a ride?” she asked.
She picked Luke. No hesitation at all.
David’s good looks clouded over.
Luke could barely hide his excitement. He opened the back door for them, all gentlemanly. “Please, Ella, after you.”
Ella and Lilly slid into the car.
Lilly shot David a look that was half sympathy, half amusement. That’s what you get for treating Ella that way. Now she’s not even looking at you.
David took a step forward.
He didn’t get far. Someone grabbed his arm.
Jessa had shown up out of nowhere, latching onto his arm and forcing a sweet smile. “David, were you waiting for me?”
David looked past her, searching for Ella.
By then, Luke’s luxury SUV was already pulling out of the driveway, Ella inside.
She was gone.
David turned back, gently pulling his arm from Jessa’s grip. “I have to get to the office. You should head home.”
He made for his car.
Jessa’s face went pale. She blocked his way. “David, take me home.”
His expression didn’t change. Things between them had already been rocky after what happened with Lilly. His voice sounded distant. “I need to go to the office.”
Jessa’s eyes filled with tears.
David’s lips curled into a cold, mocking smile. “You’re the last person who gets to talk about this. You pushed Ella to me.”
Jessa’s face went paper white. If she hadn’t run away when David was in the hospital after his accident, none of this would have happened. Ella wouldn’t have entered the picture.
She sent Ella his way.
David didn’t give her another glance. He got in his Rolls-Royce Phantom and pulled away, leaving her standing there.
…
At Harmon Corporation, in the CEO’s office.
David sat in his black leather chair as Aiden came in and spoke quietly. “Sir, we’ve finished looking into Ms. Irvine’s background. After she sent her stepfather to prison, someone started sponsoring her. Thanks to that support, she went to school, skipped several grades, and finished dual master’s degrees at Harvard by the time she was sixteen.”
