Ella knew exactly what she was doing. She and Cedric were stranded out here, and with him so badly hurt, she didn’t have the luxury of letting her guard down. Justin kept giving her these sleazy looks, so she had to stay sharp.
But Cedric wasn’t having it. In his mind, she was divorced fromDavid. Hearing her still claim that old connection just made him roll his eyes. He thought she was being ridiculous.
Cedric started to protest, but Ella cut him off with a glare that shut him right up. “Keep your mouth shut!”
Then, without warning, she pressed down on his wound. “How are you not passed out from the pain yet?”
Cedric yelped in agony, sweat breaking out across his forehead. “Ella, are you crazy? I swear, if I survive this, you’re dead!”
The village doctor spoke up, looking worried. “His leg is in bad shape. All I can do right now is stop the bleeding. He needs proper treatment in a city hospital tomorrow.”
Ella shook her head. “He can’t wait. We have to take care of it tonight.”
The doctor hesitated. “How do you want to do that?”
Ella just said, “Break it.”
Everyone froze.
Cedric’s eyes went wide. “Break it? Ella, are you out of your mind? You’re going to ruin my leg forever?”
She gave him a cold little smirk. “That’s right.”
Then she turned to the doctor. “Help me hold him down. I’m doing this now.”
The doctor nodded, looking a little freaked out but trusting her anyway. He held Cedric’s legs so he couldn’t get away.
Cedric started to panic. He tried to fight them off, but his injured leg was useless. He was trapped, forced to watch Ella get closer.
He looked at her with newfound respect.
Cedric lay there, pale as a ghost. “What do you mean, reset?”
The doctor explained quickly. “You got it all wrong. She wasn’t trying to hurt you. She was saving your leg. The injury was so bad, you probably would have lost it. But thanks to her, you still have a chance to heal. What she did was amazing.”
Cedric was stunned. He’d accused her of the worst…and she’d been saving him the whole time.
The doctor gave him a gentle nudge. “You owe her a thank you. She’s the reason you still have both legs.”
Cedric stared at Ella, guilt twisting in his chest. He’d always known she was smart, but he had no idea she could do something like this. She’d saved him, and all he’d done was insult her.
He swallowed hard. “Ella…”
