Ella’s whole body ached, every bone feeling like it might fall apart. She was freezing.
Cold waves kept smacking her face, the icy water making her shiver down to her bones. That shock cut through the fog in her mind, and she finally woke up. Slowly, she opened her eyes.
She was still alive.
The yacht had been rigged with explosives. Right as it was about to blow, she and Cedric had jumped into the sea. The freezing water crashed in around her from every direction. She’d had to fight for every breath, swimming as hard as she could. Even though she was small, she’d found some strength she didn’t know she had.
Eventually, the current had dragged her onto the shore.
Now it was night. The place was deserted. Ella managed to pull herself to her feet. “Cedric? Cedric!”
She remembered shoving him into the water. Where was he now?
She looked around, calling out, “Cedric, can you hear me? Are you alive? Say something if you are!”
She didn’t have to search long. Up ahead, she spotted someone lying by the waterline.
Cedric had washed up, too.
Ella rushed over. “Cedric? Cedric, wake up!”
He didn’t move. His right leg was a mess, blood pouring out and soaking into the sand.
Ella checked his injury, biting her lip. The wound was deep. If it didn’t get treated soon, he might lose the leg.
She wasn’t some kind of saint. Honestly, if Cedric hadn’t dragged her out to sea, none of this would have happened. He and Jessa were in it together. Part of her wanted to leave him right here and walk away.
But deep down, she knew Cedric wasn’t truly a bad person. She couldn’t just let him die.
The problem was, they were stranded. The place was empty and silent.
Justin and Austin carried Cedric, still unconscious, into a small hut and set him on a bed. The village doctor arrived quickly, kneeling to examine Cedric’s leg.
The pain must have woken Cedric up. He blinked, pale and confused, and looked around. “Where are we?”
Ella stepped closer. “Cedric, you’re awake. The sea washed us to shore. Justin helped us.”
Justin hadn’t taken his eyes off Ella. “Ella, what’s your relationship with him?”
“I’m his sister-in-law,” Ella said quickly.
Cedric shot her a look. “You’re unbelievable. Who said you’re my sister-in-law?”
Justin seemed surprised. “Ella, you’re married?”
Ella nodded. “Yeah, I’ve been married for over three years. My husband must have noticed we’re gone by now. He’ll be looking for us. He’ll find us soon. Justin, my husband will definitely want to thank you for saving us.”
