Ella left.
Justin watched her go, his face darkening with frustration.
…
Night had settled over the village. Cedric was asleep, but Ella sat wide awake, nerves on edge. She couldn’t let herself drift off, not with Justin lurking around. Telling him she was married hadn’t done any good. He clearly wasn’t giving up.
She hugged her knees by the door, listening to the quiet. The silence was so deep, it almost hurt. After the snow, the whole village felt frozen and empty, like they were stranded at the end of the world.
A shiver ran through her. She could feel a fever coming on. It made sense, after being in that freezing water for so long. Even someone strong would have trouble coping.
She pressed her nails into her palm, desperate to stay awake. Every sound made her tense up. Danger felt close.
Her mind wandered to David. Was he with Jessa right now? Had he noticed she and Cedric were missing? Was he out looking for them? She had no idea how they’d manage to get home, not with Cedric injured and Justin always hanging around.
The cold kept creeping in. Ella wrapped her arms tighter around herself and leaned her head against the doorframe. She was so tired, her eyes started to close.
Suddenly, a rough hand touched her cheek, lingering in a way that made her skin crawl. Ella’s eyes flew open.
Justin was right there, his gaze hungry, fingers tracing her face.
She tried to pull away. “Justin, what are you doing here?”
Her whole body felt heavy, her head foggy. She could barely move. Panic flared in her chest.
Revulsion twisted in her stomach. She fought him with everything she had. “Let go of me! Justin, stop! My husband will come for me. He’s rich, he won’t let you get away with this.”
But Justin wasn’t listening. He ripped open her collar, his voice thick. “Forget your husband. Tonight, I’m all you’ve got.”
He leaned down, aiming for her lips.
Ella turned her face away, hopelessness crashing over her. She was so weak. Was this really how it would end?
“No, let me go!”
Suddenly, a strong hand grabbed Justin by the collar from behind and yanked him away. The weight on top of her vanished. Ella gasped, barely believing what had just happened.
