Ella was shaking in his arms.
Cedric hugged her tighter. “It’s okay, Ella. Just hang in there. It’ll be over soon.”
...
Ella had disappeared, and David was scrambling, sending more people to search for her.
Aiden showed up with a new surveillance clip. “Boss, we found something. Ms. Irvine and Mr. Grimm both boarded a yacht, one after the other.”
David watched the footage. He saw Cedric get on after Ella was already there. His jaw clenched, and his whole expression turned stormy. “Why is Cedric suddenly in Seacore City?”
No one had an answer.
Aiden guessed, “I think Mr. Grimm was following Ms. Irvine.”
“Did you find the yacht?”
“We’ve got people searching. But the yacht... it exploded.”
David jumped to his feet. “What? Exploded?”
Aiden nodded. “Yes. Someone planted a bomb.”
Just then, Jessa approached. “David, it had to be Cedric. He’s always hated Ella, but I never thought he’d go this far. Now they’re both missing. Maybe they both died in the explosion?”
She wasn’t caught on camera, and she’d made sure of it. Ella and Cedric must be dead, so she could blame everything on Cedric and keep her own hands clean.
David didn’t even look at her. His voice was low and steady. “Search the river downstream. I want them found. Dead or alive.”
Aiden nodded. “Understood.”
David turned to go.
“David!” Jessa grabbed his arm. “Where are you going? I came all this way for you. Aren’t you going to stay with me?”
He stared at a map. “Where is this?”
Aiden pointed. “That’s West Village. It’s downstream.”
David thought for a second. “Let’s go there.”
They drove to the edge of West Village. Aiden asked, “Do you think Ms. Irvine and Mr. Grimm could really be here?”
Suddenly David stopped, his eyes catching something in the sand. He bent down and picked up a pearl earring.
Aiden’s eyes lit up. “Boss, that’s Ms. Irvine’s earring. We’re in the right place. They must be here.”
The earring was cold in David’s palm. He clenched his fist around it, feeling the chill slowly disappear against his skin.
He looked up at the village ahead. Ella, are you here with Cedric?
I’m coming.
