David led Aiden and the rest of his team into the village. As soon as they spotted a few villagers, David stepped forward and asked, “Hi, excuse me, have you seen two people come into your village today?”
The villagers eyed him suspiciously. “Who are you people? Why are you here?”
David kept it simple. “We’re looking for someone.”
One villager immediately waved him off. “No one’s come here. We don’t like outsiders. You should leave.”
A couple of the villagers started herding David and his group back the way they came.
Aiden wanted to argue. “Wait, you can’t just—”
David raised his hand to cut him off. “Alright, thanks for your help. We’ll go now.”
He turned and walked away without another word.
Aiden caught up, frowning. “Boss, why are we leaving? I really feel like Ms. Irvine and Mr. Grimm are in there.”
David’s eyes were cold and sharp, like a hawk sizing up its prey. “It’s not just a feeling. I know Ella and Cedric are in there.”
“Then shouldn’t we push harder?”
“Didn’t you notice how hostile they were? One of them already slipped away to get backup. We’re outnumbered and this is their home turf. We can’t just force our way in.”
The real problem was, he didn’t even know where Ella and Cedric were. If things got violent, they’d be the ones at risk.
With both of them trapped inside the village, David felt powerless. It was like someone had found his weak spot and was holding all the cards.
Aiden glanced at his phone. “I’ve already called for more people to come support us.”
David nodded. “That’s good, but we still need a better way to get into the village.”
Just then, a lady’s voice called out, “Who are you?”
David turned around and saw Gina.
David could tell Gina was interested. He was no stranger to girls trying to get close to him. He could always see right through them.
Right now, he needed Gina’s help, so he decided to play along.
“The cute girl is my sister, and the handsome man is my brother. They fell off a yacht out at sea and washed up here. I came to find them.”
Gina’s eyes lit up. “Are you married?”
David shook his head. “No, I’m not. Would you be able to help us?”
When she heard he was single, Gina’s smile grew even brighter. “To be honest, my brother brought a guy and a girlinto the village today. The guy’s leg was really hurt.”
Relief washed over David. Injured or not, at least they were alive.
The weight that had been pressing on him finally eased. “Gina, could you please take us to see them?”
