A crowd of students quickly gathered around. “Oh no, there’s a fight!” someone shouted. Penny’s heart started racing. Getting into a fight at school could land her in serious trouble, maybe even a demerit. Besides, it really hurt. She was getting pummeled.
Lilly had her pinned to the ground the whole time. Even though a few girls tried to pull Lilly away, it was like nothing could stop her. Penny could feel a burning pain all over her body.
With all her strength, Penny shoved Lilly off. “Lilly, just you wait. I’m getting help!” she snapped, then took off running with her friends.
Lilly was left behind, looking pretty roughed up herself. Her clothes were ripped, and she had scratch marks everywhere. She picked up her bag from the floor and headed to the locker room. There was no way she could go out looking like this, not with her shirt in tatters.
She didn’t feel an ounce of regret about fighting Penny. People who talk trash deserved to be put in their place. If Penny was getting backup, then Lilly would just wait.
Lilly pulled off her shirt, wincing when the fabric brushed her skin. Fresh pain shot through her, making her hiss under her breath. Angry red marks covered her arms and sides. She hadn’t noticed during the fight, but now every scratch stung twice as much.
Suddenly, her phone started ringing with a bright, cheerful ringtone. She checked the screen. It was Ella.
Lilly answered, and Ella’s familiar voice came through, clear and worried. “Lilly, where are you? I just heard you got into a fight.”
Ella had been waiting for her in the dorm, but someone had rushed in to say they saw Lilly fighting with a group of girls.
Lilly held the phone tight. “I’m fine, Ella. I ran into Penny, and I overheard her and some other girls talking trash about Jace.”
“So you fought them… for Jace?” Ella asked, a little exasperated.
“Yeah. There were like five or six of them, but I held my own…” Lilly tried to sound tough, but she winced as her hand brushed a sore spot. Tears pricked at her eyes.
