Penny grinned. “Yeah, that’s right. Jace is the son of a drug dealer. His mom’s blind, and he has a younger sister in middle school. Their family situation is a mess. But honestly, the whole thimess ng just makes me want to take on the challenge, you know?” She laughed, and the girls with her cracked up, practically doubled over as they made fun of Jace’s family.

Lilly felt her stomach twist. She reached over and turned off the faucet, her pretty eyes narrowing as she looked at Penny and the others. “Are you done?” she asked, her voice cool and steady.

Penny and the others froze, caught off guard. Penny stared at Lilly and immediately recognized her. “Oh, look who it is. Lilly, the girl everyone’s been talking about. Why do you care what we’re saying?”

Lilly frowned. “You shouldn’t make fun of him. His pain isn’t a joke for you to laugh at.”

Lilly had been to Jace’s house before. She knew what it was really like. Jace’s family might be struggling, but his mom and sister were warm and kind. Their apartment was dark and damp. Jace was barely out of high school, just turned eighteen. She still remembered how that drunk guy spat out the word “bastard” one night, and it made her realize just how hard Jace’s life had been.

Lilly couldn’t just stand there while Penny and her friends laughed at him like it was nothing.

Penny didn’t see a problem with what she was doing. She shot Lilly a look, sizing her up. “I know know what you’re up to, Lilly. You’ve been looking for Jace all week. You want him, too, don’t you? He must be really something to get all the rich girls chasing after him.”

Lilly didn’t bother to answer that. It wasn’t the point, and she didn’t owe them an explanation. She took a step closer. “What does it matter if I like him or not? At least I’m not bitter just because I can’t have him.”

Penny’s face changed in an instant. The words hit home. She did have feelings for Jace, deep ones, but she couldn’t have him, so she tried to tear him down instead. Now that Lilly had called her out, Penny looked pissed and embarrassed. Her fists clenched tight.
