Lilly took off after Jace.
Lucas caught her arm before she got far. “Where do you think you’re going? Stay here.”
She yanked her arm free, shooting him an annoyed look. “You’re not my dad. Mind your own business!”
Without waiting for a reply, she hurried after Jace.
Lucas stood there, fists clenched, fuming.
…
Lilly finally caught up with Jace at a small neighborhood clinic. Inside, Tiffany lay unconscious on a narrow hospital bed, her face pale under the harsh lights.
Victoria stood beside her, crying so hard her shoulders shook. A neighbor was trying to comfort her, but Victoria just kept wiping at her tears, looking terrified.
Jace rushed in, breathless. “Victoria!”
“Jace!” Victoria flung herself into his arms and sobbed even harder. “You have to help Mom. I keep calling her, but she won’t wake up.”
Jace hugged her, murmuring a few words to calm her down, then turned to his mother on the bed. “Mom! Mom, can you hear me?”
Tiffany didn’t move.
The neighbor gave Jace a worried look. “You need to get her to a bigger hospital. The doctor came earlier and said she needs more advanced care right away. But the main hospitals are all packed, and it’s so hard to find a good doctor. What should we do?”
The neighbor sighed, watching Jace. Jace had been holding the family together ever since his dad passed away. It always seemed like bad luck picked on the people who could handle it the least.
Before Jace could answer, Lilly burst in, almost out of breath. “I can help. I know people at Central Hospital. Let me take care of it.”
Victoria looked over at Lilly, tears streaking her cheeks. “Lilly…”
Lilly pulled out her phone without hesitation. “Victoria, it’s going to be okay. I’ll make the call right now.”
