Lilly hurried over to Jace, trying to stop what was happening. “Jace, don’t do this with Lucas. You’re going to hurt yourself. If you really need money, I can…”
Jace shot her a look and she instantly fell silent.
She hadn’t meant for it to come out like that. She just didn’t want to see him get hurt.
Jace turned to the foreman. “Let’s get started.”
The foreman began stacking bags of cement onto Jace’s shoulders, one after another. Soon there were eight.
He added a ninth, then a tenth.
Lucas watched, clearly entertained, and clapped his hands together. “Wow, Jace, I didn’t think you’d go this far for money. One thousand. Two thousand.”
He tossed two thousand in cash onto the ground.
The foreman added two more bags, bringing it to eleven, then twelve.
“Three thousand. Four thousand.”
Lucas kept throwing bills on the ground.
With twelve heavy bags weighing him down, Jace’s face stayed calm, but sweat was already dripping down his forehead. His uniform was soaked.
Lilly wanted to stop all of it, but no matter what she said, it would just make things worse. All she could do was watch.
The foreman hesitated, sympathy on his face. Jace was about the same age as his own son. “Jace, if you need to stop, just tell me, all right?”
Jace stayed silent.
The foreman kept going, adding a thirteenth bag, then a fourteenth.
“Five thousand. Six thousand.”
Lucas tossed more money down, the bills piling up.
Lilly’s eyes stayed on Jace. She knew he was proud, but fourteen bags was too much. His back was already bending under the weight.
