Tina smiled and tapped Victoria lightly on the forehead. “Your brother spoils you. He made sure you went to the best middle school. He’d never let you stay single just to keep him company.”
Victoria grinned, her laughter soft and sweet.
Just then, Lilly walked in.
Victoria’s eyes brightened. “Lilly!”
Tina stood up right away. “Lilly, do you have the test results?”
Lilly’s eyes were red. She nodded. “Yeah, I have them.”
Victoria’s voice trembled. “Lilly, what’s going on with my mom? Is she really sick?”
Lilly glanced at Tiffany lying in the hospital bed but didn’t say a word.
Tina noticed the tension and spoke quickly. “Victoria, come outside with me for a minute. I need to talk to you.”
Victoria didn’t think much of it. “Okay.”
Tina led her out, leaving the room quiet except for Lilly and Tiffany.
Lilly sat down beside Tiffany’s bed, watching her closely.
Tiffany’s clothes were clean, but the fabric had faded with age. She still looked neat, her silver hair pinned up, her face as gentle and calm as always.
Lilly thought about her own mother, who was around the same age as Tiffany. Right now, her mom was off enjoying a vacation in Europe, buying pretty dresses and living her best life. She always said women were born to love beauty.
