Ella was making it clear. They were here to ask for help.
Grandma Jill, Jessa, and Maureen all froze. The embarrassment on their faces was obvious, and all that earlier bravado disappeared in an instant.
Ella pretended to push the door shut again.
Grandma Jill quickly spoke up. “Ella, wait, please don’t close the door. We’re here to ask for your help. Please, we’re begging you.”
She was the first to swallow her pride.
Ella raised an eyebrow and looked at the others.
Logan and Ruby lowered their heads too. “Ella, we made some mistakes before. Please, for the sake of our family, help us.”
Peter followed along, his voice low. “Ella, there’s no need for family to make things ugly. Please, just help us.”
Ella’s eyes landed on Rachel.
Rachel didn’t want to give in. None of this made sense to her. It was all wrong. How had the girl she abandoned as a child turned into some kind of genius, driving luxury cars and living in a mansion, while her own family got tricked out of everything and ended up on the street? Now they were begging Ella for help? How did it come to this?
Rachel kept her mouth shut, but Grandma Jill shot her a glare that couldn’t be ignored.
In the end, Rachel forced herself to bow her head. “Ella, it’s my fault. You’re still an Irvine. Please, help us.”
Ella turned to Jessa and Maureen.
Maureen looked down. “Ella, please, I’m begging you.”
Jessa’s jaw was clenched so tight she looked like she might crack a tooth. “Ella, please.”
Ella’s clear eyes settled on Jessa. “Sorry, Jessa, I didn’t quite catch that. Could you say it a little louder?”
