David wasn’t sure if Ella would show up. Honestly, neither was the rest of the Irvine family. Everyone was waiting for her, tense and restless. Then a Rolls-Royce with a sparkling starlit ceiling rolled up to the curb. The driver’s door swung open and, just like that, Ella stepped out. She looked stunning, perfectly put together, like she owned the place.
Aiden’s eyes lit up. “Boss, Ms. Irvine is here. She actually came!”
David looked up, and his gaze lingered on Ella as she walked over. Grandma Jill hurried toward her. “Ella, you were almost late.”
Ella smiled, her lips painted that signature red. “I’m not late. There’s still a minute before the meeting time. Or do none of you have the patience to wait even sixty seconds?”
Grandma Jill was left speechless.
Jessa jumped right in. “Ella, enough with that. Where’s the fake Doctor E?”
She looked around, searching behind Ella. It was clear Ella had come alone. There was no sign of the imposter.
Jessa’s voice was sharp. “You didn’t bring him, did you? I knew it. You’re all talk, just a liar trying to impress everyone.”
She grabbed Grandma Jill’s arm, trying to rally support. “Grandma, see? She didn’t bring him. I told you, she’s just a housewife. How could she pull this off?”
Ella glanced at Jessa, amused. “Jessa, do you want me to bring him or not? You really can’t make up your mind. Are you sure you don’t have some sort of split personality?”
Jessa was quiet, caught off guard. Ella had nailed it. The truth was, Jessa was a mess of contradictions. Part of her wanted Ella to bring the fake Doctor E so she could keep living her sweet, privileged life. But another part of her couldn’t stand the idea of Ella pulling it off. She just didn’t believe Ella had what it took, and it drove her crazy to think Ella might be better than her at something.
Grandma Jill shot Jessa a stern look. “Enough, Jessa. If we don’t catch the fake Doctor E, it’s bad for all of us.”
