David’s expression didn’t give anything away. He answered with a voice so cool and calm it barely sounded like him. “Not yet.”
Rachel pressed him, her tone anxious. “Mr. Harmon, you really need to move faster. Jessa can’t afford to wait any longer.”
Peter nodded in agreement. “She was lucky we got to her in time this round. What if next time we can’t bring her back?”
David barely glanced at them. “I know.”
Just then, his phone chimed with a soft ringtone. He checked the screen. “Excuse me. I need to take this.” Without waiting for a reply, he stepped out of the room.
Jessa watched him go, her thoughts spinning faster than ever.
Aiden slipped in through the door a moment later. “Ms. Irvine, your admission paperwork is all set. You can just focus on getting better for now.” He sounded like he was already halfway out.
But Jessa called out, stopping him. “Aiden, wait.”
He paused, polite as always. “Yes, Ms. Irvine? Is there something else?”
Jessa looked at him, her voice steady. “Aiden, I already know. David told me.”
Aiden froze, surprise flickering across his face. David had ordered him to keep this secret, but then he’d told Jessa himself? Maybe their relationship really was as deep as everyone whispered.
He stuttered, “Ms. Irvine, you…”
Jessa caught the hesitation. That was all the confirmation she needed. Her gut had been right. David was hiding something, and it was about her.
She took a slow breath. “David told me he found a matching heart for me. But the donor…” She paused, her eyes searching Aiden’s face.
Aiden was always careful with his words. He wouldn’t spill anything by accident. But even his silence was telling.
Jessa pressed on anyway. “The donor… it’s someone close to me, isn’t it? It’s Ella.”
