The phone rang just once before someone picked up. Ella’s voice was bright and clear, “Hello.”

Jessa couldn’t help but smile. Ella had no idea what was coming, and just thinking about how things would turn out for her made Jessa feel a little smug.

“Ella, I just wanted to thank you. You helped us catch the fake Doctor E, and now we’re working hard to get back the money the Irvine family lost. We might not recover it all, but your help really meant a lot.”

Ella was at Stellaris Apartments, barely leaving her place these days. She’d been sleeping way more than usual, though she couldn’t figure out why.

As she listened to Jessa’s thanks, Ella lifted an eyebrow. “Jessa, you don’t have to be so indirect with me. If you’ve got something to say, just say it.”

Jessa, being grateful? That had to be a joke. Ella didn’t buy it for a second.

Jessa laughed softly. “Ella, I had some heart trouble today and fainted. They took me to the hospital. We’re sisters, right? Can you come visit me?”

Ella shot back, “If that is enough to cure you, then why do you even need doctors?”

Jessa was silent for a moment. Ella’s sharp tongue never failed to get under her skin. She wanted to snap back, but she held her temper. There was no rush. The game had only just started.

Jessa continued, “Here’s the thing. David’s been looking for a heart donor for me, and he finally found one. You actually know this person. If you come by, I’ll tell you who it is.”

Was that so? Ella wasn’t sure what Jessa was plotting, but she figured she’d find out soon enough. After learning that the Irvine family was behind her father’s death, she’d been waiting for them to walk right into her hands.

A small smile played on Ella’s lips. “Alright. I’ll come see you now.”

After hanging up, Ella poured herself a glass of warm water. As soon as she took a sip, a wave of nausea hit her. She leaned over the sink and gagged, but there was nothing in her stomach, so all she could do was retch up bitter bile. It left her feeling even worse.
