David stared at Jessa. “You already know about the heart match?”
Jessa didn’t hesitate. “Yeah, I know. Ella’s heart is a match for mine. David, why didn’t you tell me?”
David shot back, “If I had told you, then what?”
Jessa shrugged like it was obvious. “Then you’d find a way to make Ella save me.”
David fell silent.
Jessa pressed him. “David, don’t you want to save me? Between me and Ella, do you really need to think about it? Is she so important now that you’re hesitating?”
David looked her in the eye. “Ella’s not an option.”
Jessa’s face went white. He really just said it. Ella’s not an option.
“So what about me? Are you just giving up on me? Did you forget what you promised? You’ve been hot and cold with me lately, and now you won’t even try to save me? Are you really going to just watch me die?”
David’s voice was soft, almost tired. “I’ve already told people to keep looking. Ella’s not an option, but I will save you.”
He turned and walked out.
“David! Come back!” Jessa was furious. He actually turned her down. In the end, he just couldn’t let anything happen to Ella. If this was before, David would have agreed without a second thought. She didn’t know when it started, but something had changed between David and Ella. He wasn’t the same, and that scared her.
...
Wyatt called Ella to invite her to dinner, but she refused. She already had plans with Fiona and Lilly for a girls’ night.
The three of them grabbed a table by the window at a restaurant. Lilly picked up the menu. “Ella, Fiona, what are you guys in the mood for?”
