Their eyes locked across the room. Jace’s face was hidden behind a mask, making it impossible to read his expression. Still, his gaze was icy, as distant as if Lilly were just another stranger.
The host grinned and leaned into the mic. “Alright, ladies, try to contain yourselves. Here’s the deal—only one of you gets to come on stage and touch our star. We’ll hold an auction. Highest bid wins.”
Instantly, the women around them jumped in.
“Ten thousand.”
“Thirty thousand!”
“Fifty!”
“One hundred thousand!”
The number skyrocketed. Fiona stared in disbelief. “A hundred thousand just for a touch? Are his abs made of gold? Has everyone lost their minds?”
Lilly suddenly raised her hand. “Two hundred thousand!”
Ella and Fiona both gawked at her. Fiona grabbed Lilly’s sleeve and whispered, “Lilly, what are you doing? Don’t get caught up in this.”
But Lilly kept her eyes on Jace. Her gaze was determined, a little defiant. “Two hundred thousand. I want to touch him.”
Jace glanced down at her. She had this stubborn, spoiled air about her, like she was determined to outbid every girl in the room just to claim him for herself.
Ella watched Jace too, and it clicked for her right away. Only Jace could get Lilly acting this out of character.
The women weren’t ready to give up. Someone called out, “Five hundred thousand!”
Another voice immediately followed. “One million!”
Lilly hesitated. She hadn’t brought that much cash. She turned to Ella, tugging her arm. “Ella, can you lend me some money? I’ll pay you back tonight.”
Ella didn’t hesitate. She pulled out the black card David had given her, holding it out. “Take whatever you need.”
Lilly straightened up, eyes shining. “Five million!”
