Ella didn’t bother talking to him. She had just finished drying her hair and was now sitting at her vanity, carefully smoothing creams and lotions over her face. The bottles covered almost every inch of the table, and she made sure each step left her smelling sweet and fresh.

Even though they’d been married for more than three years, David had never shared a bed with Ella. Actually, he’d never shared a bed with any girl. Tonight was the first time.

Watching Ella focus on her skincare was oddly entertaining. She moved with this quiet confidence, totally in her own world.

Suddenly, she seemed to sense his eyes on her. She turned around and caught him staring.

Their eyes locked for a second before he could look away.

She shot him a glare. “What are you staring at? Never seen a pretty girl before?”

David smirked. “Maybe try picking up a book sometime. No matter how much you fuss over your looks, you’re still just a pretty face.”

Ella stiffened. Deep down, she wanted to snap back, but she held it in. One day, she thought, he’ll eat his words. He’ll see he’s been looking down on me for nothing.

She didn’t say anything else, just climbed into bed and pulled the covers up.

A second later, David’s phone chimed.

He glanced down and saw a notification. Mr. Shepherd from Rosewood College had just created a group chat and added him in.

Besides himself, there was only one other member. The profile picture was just a black square, and the username was E. The genius girl who had turned down his friend request the other day.

Now the three of them were in a chat together.

Mr. Shepherd sent a welcome message. “The Rosewood College’s stars! We’re about to launch a new digital game and would love for you both to test your speed before it goes live.”

David replied with a simple, “OK.”

W replied too. Just, “OK.”

Mr. Shepherd dropped the game app into the chat. David and W both tapped in at the same time, jumping straight into the programming challenge.
