The word “annoying” came out of nowhere, leaving him totally confused.
David didn’t think much of it. He set his phone down and kept working through the stack of paperwork on his desk.
By the time he wrapped up for the night, it was late. He got up, poured himself a glass of water, and glanced over at the bed. Ella was fast asleep.
He was about to settle back onto the sofa when Ella’s phone lit up with a new message, the screen glowing right beside her pillow.
David’s eyes flicked over to it. For a moment, he frowned. The profile picture that popped up looked exactly like the one the genius girl, E, used.
He walked over to the bed, reaching for her phone. Just then, Ella rolled over in her sleep and her soft cheek brushed against his hand.
David froze. What was he even doing? Maybe he’d imagined it. There was no way Ella could be the genius girl, right?
No way. She was just a pretty face.
Then he noticed the gentle pressure on his palm. Ella, still dreaming, nuzzled his hand like a sleepy kitten.
His gaze lingered on her for a moment. The bedside lamp cast a warm glow over her features, making her skin look impossibly soft. A few dark strands of hair curled around her neck and her lips, which were just slightly parted and rosy. The contrast of her glowing skin, dark hair, and red lips was almost too much to take in.
Sometimes, a girl’s beauty could be dangerous, especially for a man. David found himself staring at her longer than he meant to.
He quickly pulled his hand back and straightened up. He was sure of one thing. David Harmon would not let himself be distracted by a girl’s looks.
He’d seen plenty of beautiful girls before. He wasn’t about to lose his head over her.
He retreated to the sofa, closed his eyes, and tried to sleep.
