The tension in the room shot up in an instant. Scar honestly hadn’t expected David to actually hit him.
Still, David was the one holding the money. Scar couldn’t afford to piss him off, so he forced himself to swallow his anger.
“Mr. Harmon, did you bring what I asked for?” Scar asked, forcing a casual tone.
David’s voice was cold, almost emotionless. “I brought it. Every cent. But I want a fair trade. I hand over the money and you hand over the people.”
Scar flashed a sly grin. “Sure, we do it your way. But I’m only giving you one person.”
David’s eyes narrowed, his deep voice suddenly sharp. “What’s that supposed to mean?”
“We agreed on an exchange, but I never said I’d give you both of them. Ten billion only buys you one,” Scar said, his smile turning cruel.
“I can pay more,” David replied.
Scar shook his head. “That’s not how it works, Mr. Harmon. These are the rules. I only hand over one. So, you get to choose. Your ex-wife or your girlfriend. Pick one to take with you. The other stays here with us.” He laughed, the sound making Ella’s skin crawl.
Ella’s face drained of color. She hadn’t seen this coming, Scar forcing David to choose between her and Jessa.
Jessa didn’t hesitate. “David, you don’t even need to think about it, right? You’ll pick me. My heart’s acting up again, I need to get out of here, please.”
David glanced at Jessa, then looked at Ella.
Ella met his eyes. “If I begged you, would you pick me?”
She wasn’t stupid. Of course she wanted to get out. She wasn’t alone anymore. She had David’s baby growing inside her.
Would he choose her if she asked?
David’s handsome brow furrowed, but he didn’t say anything.
Scar grew impatient. “Mr. Harmon, I’m counting to three. Make your choice or you leave with no one. One… two…”
Jessa burst in, desperate. “David, did you forget what you promised me? You said you’d take me with you. You said you’d always take care of me.”
Scar was about to say “three” when David finally spoke. “I choose Jessa.”
