When Ella said that, Jessa immediately stepped forward. “That’s not what I meant…”
Ella looked right at her. “Then what did you mean? Are you hoping I’ll treat you?”
Jessa had no words.
A slow, amused smile tugged at Ella’s lips. “Sure, I can treat you. But you’ll have to beg me first.”
She wanted Jessa to beg. The humiliation in the air was almost physical.
Jessa’s face turned ghostly pale.
Ella knew Jessa too well. Jessa had always looked down on her, always acting like she was better than everyone else. Finding out Ella was Doctor E had already shattered her pride. Now, if she had to swallow it all and beg for help, it would be worse than death.
And it wasn’t just Jessa feeling that way. Grandma Jill, Rachel, Maureen… every one of them was struggling with the bitter taste of defeat.
Ella watched them, her eyes bright with laughter. “You need something from me now. If you want something, you have to show some sincerity. Isn’t that what you always taught me?”
Rachel snapped, “Ella, you—”
Ella cut her off, her tone light and cold. “Of course, you don’t have to beg. You can just wait for Jessa to die. Your choice.”
Grandma Jill finally spoke up, her voice shaking. “Ella, you’re a doctor. Aren’t you supposed to be compassionate? How can you say something like that?”
Compassion? Really?
Ella stepped closer, stopping just in front of Grandma Jill. “Anyone else could say that to me, but not you. Do I need to remind you how my dad died?”
Grandma Jill stared at her, terrified. Did Ella know the truth?
Ella watched her reaction, enjoying every second. She wasn’t in a hurry. This was just the beginning. She had all the time in the world to settle the score.
