Ella told David he’d need to make an appointment.

David’s usually composed face turned stormy in an instant. No one had ever told him to get in line before. Ella was definitely the first.

“Mr. Harmon, see you.”

With that, Ella led her team down the hallway, not even looking back.

David stayed where he was, at a rare loss for words.

Aiden came over, trying to break the tension. “Sir, maybe I could talk to Ms. Irvine’s assistant and set up a meeting?”

He barely finished before David shot him a cold stare.

Aiden felt totally innocent. “Sir, now she’s Doctor E. She’s a legend. People say she’s impossible to get ahold of. Even billionaires have to make appointments to see her. I really don’t think she’s singling you out. It’s just how things work with her now.”

He was just trying to help, but David only looked more irritated with every word.

“Just shut up,” David replied, his tone frigid.

Aiden went quiet.

Then David’s phone rang, the cheerful ringtone cutting through the awkward silence. It was Mr. Lynch.

David picked up. “Did you know who Ella really was this whole time?”

Mr. Lynch laughed. “David, sounds like you finally figured it out. Ella is Doctor E. Why are you blaming me? Doctor E was your wife, your wife was Doctor E. You didn’t know, and that’s not on me.”

David had nothing to say to that.

Mr. Lynch wasn’t finished. “Oh, and by the way, she’s not your wife anymore, is she? You’re divorced now. Almost forgot.”

David just stared at the wall, silent.

What was with today? Was everyone around him determined to rub salt in his wounds?
