Lilly’s heart jumped in her chest. Oh no, she’d slipped up!

She’d been so angry on Ella’s behalf, so worried about the baby growing inside her, that she’d blurted everything out without thinking.

Trying to recover, Lilly quickly said, “What baby? David, you must have heard wrong. I didn’t say anything about a baby.”

David’s voice was steady but full of suspicion. “You did say it. You said I left Ella and the child behind. Lilly, are you all keeping something from me?”

Lilly felt a wave of guilt. Thank goodness David wasn’t here in person. She was a terrible liar and would have given everything away on the spot. “David, I told you, you misheard. I never said anything about a child. Or... do you want a kid or something?”

Her question caught David off guard. He went quiet.

“See? You don’t even like kids, so why are you asking? I have something to do. See you.” And with that, Lilly ended the call.

David sat in his apartment, listening to the empty dial tone with a frown. He was sure he hadn’t imagined it.

Was Ella really pregnant?

He remembered out of nowhere that she’d once asked him if he liked kids.

David glanced at his watch. It was late. Wyatt was spending the night at Ella’s place. What were they doing right now?

He stood up, left his apartment, and walked straight to Ella’s door.

He pressed the doorbell.

The door opened quickly, but it wasn’t Ella. Wyatt stood there, calm and handsome, like he’d been expecting David all along. “Mr. Harmon, you’re back again. Looking for Ella?”

David’s lips pressed together. “Where is she?”

Wyatt shrugged lightly. “She’s in the shower.”
