“David, just hear me out,” Jessa pleaded, her voice a little shaky.
David’s eyes stayed fixed on her, calm and cool. “Jessa, I don’t want any explanations right now. I just need to know where the pendant is.”
He gave her a cold, almost mocking smile. “You’re not lying to me, are you, Jessa?”
Jessa stiffened. “Lying? What are you talking about?”
He looked at her, eyes steady and unreadable. “The girl who saved me back then wasn’t you, was it? Have you been pretending all this time? Taking credit for something you didn’t do?”
His stare was so intense, so distant, it made Jessa’s skin prickle. David had never looked at her like this before. Was he onto her? Did he somehow know the truth?
She couldn’t read anything from his face. There was nothing but cool detachment, which only made her more anxious. She had no idea how much he actually knew.
Still, there was no way she was going to confess. Too much was at stake. Her entire life, the luxury, the status, all of it depended on this. “David, I don’t understand what you’re saying. Why would you even think that?” she said, her tone wounded.
She tried to sound sincere. “I saved you in that cave. You promised you’d take me with you, that you’d always be there for me. Did you really forget?”
David’s voice was even. “If it really was you, that’s good. Jessa, I’ve given you more than ten years of my life. But if you’re lying, you know what that would mean for you.”
Aiden had asked David once who he wanted that girl to be.
David didn’t know. He just felt a growing sense of dread.
He’d given Jessa so many years, invested so much. If she wasn’t the one, how could he have been so blind?
And if that girl was Ella… he couldn’t even let himself imagine it. He didn’t want to think about how he’d treated her all this time.
He just couldn’t let his mind go there.
Jessa’s voice was firm. “David, you don’t have to worry. I’d never lie to you.”
