“David, you’ve changed. You barely talk to me anymore. Why were you with Ella last night?”
“I tried so hard just now to get close, but you pushed me away. You’d rather be with Ella than even touch me. Is she really so much more attractive than I am?”
David’s face was half-hidden in the soft light, his expression impossible to read. “Jessa, I’m running out of patience. If you don’t show me the pendant, then…”
“David, look at this!”
Jessa pulled out the pendant.
David’s whole body went still. He knew that pendant instantly. It was the Harmon family’s heirloom, the only one of its kind.
It was his pendant.
So it really was Jessa who saved him all those years ago.
Jessa met his eyes. “David, I’ve had this pendant the whole time. It hurts that you don’t trust me. Did Ella say something to you? Did she tell you she was the one who saved you?”
“I felt bad for Ella and let her stay with the Irvine family. She must’ve overheard me and my mom talking about saving you, and then she lied and said it was her.”
“If it wasn’t for this pendant proving the truth, would you have just believed her? Did one word from Ella make you doubt everything we’ve been through?”
So the girl who saved him was Jessa.
Now that David saw the pendant for himself, he couldn’t even describe what he felt. There was disappointment, a dull ache. He realized, deep down, he’d actually hoped it was Ella.
His heart had already drifted to her.
He’d hurt Jessa.
Jessa shoved the pendant into his chest, her eyes shining with tears. “David, let’s break up.”
David was stunned. “Jessa…”
