Right then, the apartment door clicked open and Ella stepped into the hallway.

David and Jessa had made enough noise that Ella couldn’t ignore it. She peeked out, only to catch sight of David and Jessa holding each other close.

For a moment, Ella just stood there, stunned.

David heard the door and let go of Jessa. He turned to face Ella.

Their eyes met, and something twisted painfully inside David. He had no idea why, but letting go of Ella right now hurt more than he expected.

Jessa shot Ella a smug little smile, then let out a dramatic, “Ouch.”

David snapped his attention back to her. “What’s wrong?”

Jessa gave him her most helpless look. “My leg’s asleep. I can’t walk.”

She reached out for him. “David, can you carry me?”

Of course, David didn’t say no. He scooped Jessa up in his arms.

With Ella watching, he carried Jessa straight into his apartment.

Jessa glanced over David’s shoulder at Ella, arching her brows in triumph, like she was saying, You’ll never beat me.

The door clicked shut behind them.

Ella watched them disappear, her face calm and unreadable. There was no hint of anger or sadness. She and David were done.

She touched her still-flat stomach, then turned and went back inside her own apartment.
