Just as the quiet settled in, a bright ringtone filled the air. Someone was calling.
Rachel’s name flashed on Jessa’s screen. She picked up right away. Rachel’s voice was tight with worry. “Jessa, how are things going with Mr. Harmon?”
A small smile played on Jessa’s lips. “Don’t worry, Mom. Everything’s under control.”
“Really?” Rachel’s excitement was obvious.
“Yeah. You and Grandma can relax. No matter what Ella tries, David’s on our side. He’s even making sure I get treatment for my heart. He’s done with Ella. For good.”
“That’s amazing! If Mr. Harmon really breaks things off with Ella, this is going to get interesting. Jessa, you’re incredible.”
Jessa’s grin widened. For a moment, everything felt right.
...
The three days were up. Early that morning, Ella made her way to her father’s grave.
She’d given the Irvine family three days. Today was her day to face them and finally hold them accountable.
Standing before Jon’s headstone, she looked at the photo of her dad. His gentle, beaming smile stared back at her.
Ella reached out, her fingers brushing the image. She whispered, “Dad, the Irvines will be here soon. I promise you, not one of the people who hurt you is getting away with it.”
Suddenly, her phone chimed. It was Wyatt.
She answered on the first ring. “Ella, are you at the cemetery already?” Wyatt’s voice came through.
“I’m here,” she replied.
“Alright, I’ll be there in a minute.”
“Wyatt, I’ve got this. You don’t have to come. Seriously.”
