Ella didn’t refuse. Grandma Jill led everyone, then they bowed in front of Jon’s grave. “Jon, Mom is here to see you,” she said softly.
Then Grandma Jill turned to Ella. “Ella, we’re still family. Jon may have been adopted, but he called me Mom. There’s no reason for us to keep fighting like this. Here at Jon’s grave, can’t we just let it go and make peace?”
She held out her hand, wanting to put an end to it all.
Ella let out a cold laugh, her gaze cutting straight through Grandma Jill. “Yeah, my dad called you Mom. But what kind of mother helps kill her own child? You all had a hand in my father’s death, and now, here at his grave, you want to shake hands and pretend nothing happened?”
Her eyes landed on Peter, Rachel, Logan, and Ruby one after another. “Tell me, if I wasn’t Doctor E, would any of you even be here for my father?”
She knew the truth. The Irvine family wasn’t here out of guilt or love. They were only here because of her identity. They never cared about her father, and they sure didn’t care about her. They were bullies, nothing more, and she wasn’t about to let them off the hook.
Peter spoke up. “Ella, there’s no need to be so harsh. My brother really did raise an amazing daughter. Not only are you a Harvard genius, you’re also the famous Doctor E. But you don’t have to aim all your anger at your own family.”
Logan chimed in. “That’s right, Ella. Don’t be so heartless. You’re still an Irvine.”
They were trying to guilt her into forgiveness.
Ella scoffed. “Funny, I remember you all cut ties with me a long time ago. If it weren’t for my dad, I’d have changed my last name already. The name Irvine disgusts me.”
Grandma Jill’s face twisted. “Ella!”
Jessa stepped forward. “Ella, we’ve shown you respect and tried to make peace, but you just won’t accept it.”
