Jessa ended the call and slipped her phone into her pocket just as David’s deep, smooth voice cut through the quiet. “Why are you standing in the doorway?”
He stepped out of the study, holding a thick stack of papers. Aiden trailed behind him, looking businesslike as ever.
Jessa flashed a quick smile. “Nothing, really. You can go back to work, David.”
David looked her up and down, his expression skeptical, and Jessa felt her heart skip a beat. She tried to keep her face neutral, but she knew how sharp David was. He could spot the slightest hint that something was off.
Aiden cleared his throat and lifted the file. “Sir, there’s a problem with this contract.”
David’s attention shifted away from Jessa. “Come on. Let’s talk in the study.”
He and Aiden disappeared back into the room, the door clicking softly behind them.
Jessa let out a slow breath, finally able to relax. A sly smile curled on her lips. Now all she had to do was wait for the good news. Tonight, Ella’s baby would be gone. No more threats. No one else standing in her way.
...
Ella gripped the steering wheel as she drove toward Fiona’s apartment, her mind racing. Her phone rang, and she answered on the second ring.
“Hey, Ella? I just tried calling Fiona, but her phone’s off,” Lilly said, her voice puzzled.
She hasn’t heard yet, Ella realized. “Lilly, listen to me. Something happened to Fiona. She’s been taken.”
“What?!” Lilly nearly shouted. “Who took her?”
“It was David.”
There was a sharp inhale on the other end. “Mr. Harmon? Why would he do that?”
“He’s trying to force me to treat Jessa’s heart. He’s on Jessa’s side now, and honestly, he’ll do anything. He doesn’t have any limits left.”
