The surface was icy against her back. Around her, doctors in white coats moved quietly, their faces unreadable. One of them snapped the tops off a few small glass vials, then drew the liquid out with a long syringe. He spoke in a low, steady voice. “Get the anesthetic ready. We’re starting the abortion.”
