Ella spotted David and Jessa near the bar. Jessa had been discharged from the hospital already. She looked gorgeous tonight, standing close to David with her arm looped through his. The two of them looked like a picture-perfect couple, totally wrapped up in each other.
Fiona rolled her eyes. “Ella, Mr. Harmon really loves Jessa, doesn’t he? She caused such a scene that Grandma Chelsea ended up in the hospital, and he just pretends nothing ever happened. Now they’re back together like always.”
Ella hadn’t expected to bump into David and Jessa here, but seeing them so cozy again didn’t faze her. She managed a small, wry smile for Fiona. “It’s not like David’s devotion to Jessa is some big secret.”
There was a time when this would have stung. Now, she just felt numb.
Suddenly, the sharp click of heels echoed across the floor. “Mr. Harmon, Jessa, what a coincidence.”
Ella glanced up and saw Maureen walk in.
Maureen was stunning tonight in a strappy black dress, her wavy hair falling perfectly around her shoulders and lips painted a bold red. She looked straight at David, her eyes lighting up with obvious interest.
Ella arched a brow. Looked like tonight was about to get interesting.
Jessa, completely clueless about Maureen’s crush on David, clung tighter to his arm and gave her cousin a sugary smile. “Maureen, what are the odds?”
Cedric perked up. “Since everyone’s here, why don’t we all sit down and play a game? Atlas, Ella, you guys in?”
Atlas turned to Ella. “Want to join?”
Ella was about to say no, but Fiona cut in before she could. “We’re in.”
Only then did Maureen notice Atlas and Ella together. Her jaw dropped. “Atlas is here with Ella?”
Jessa leaned closer, her voice full of gossip. “You didn’t know? Atlas totally has a thing for Ella.”
She hurried after him, lips pushed out in a pout. “David, why didn’t you answer my calls last night?”
David’s face was unreadable, his sharp features hard as stone.
By then, Ella, Atlas, and Fiona had already settled at a table, and Maureen, Cedric, and a few other rich kids joined them. The game was about to start, so Jessa had to let it go for now. She slid in beside David, trying to act normal.
Cedric clapped his hands. “Alright, everyone’s here. Let’s play Truth or Dare.”
He put a beer bottle in the middle of the table. The rules were simple. Spin the bottle. Whoever the neck pointed at got to pick truth or dare, and the person at the other end asked the question or gave the challenge.
The first round began.
The bottle spun and spun, slowing to a stop. The neck pointed at Maureen. The other end landed right on David.
