The Genius Ex-Wife’s Revenge Portfolio novel Chapter 6

The lights in the VIP booth were low and hazy. David sat right in the middle of the plush sofa, dressed in a fitted black shirt and matching slacks. His sleeves were rolled up just enough to show off his strong, tanned arms and a watch that probably cost more than most people’s houses. He looked like he belonged in a magazine, the kind of guy every girl in the bar couldn’t help but look at, some even turning twice just to make sure they saw him right.

Cedric Grimm, his best friend, lounged beside him, along with a few other rich guys who always seemed to be around. Cedric burst out laughing, voice carrying over the music. “Wait, what did you say? Ella wants a divorce?”

The others cracked up too. “Come on, everyone knows Ella is obsessed with David. She wanted to marry him even when he was stuck in a hospital bed. No way she’d let go of him now.”

“Let’s bet on it. How long before she comes running back?” one of them joked.

“My money’s on today,” Cedric said, grinning. “She’ll be texting David any minute. Just watch.”

David’s jaw tightened. He was clearly in a bad mood, not that he’d ever admit it. He picked up his phone and opened his messages with Ella.

The last one was from last night, a picture of a steaming bowl of broth. She’d written, “Honey, even though your bones are fine now, you should still drink this. Come home early, okay?”

He scrolled up. The whole conversation was just her, sending message after message. She’d texted him every day.

He’d never replied.

Not once.

Today, though, there was nothing. No texts. No emojis. Silence.

That made something twist in his chest, something he didn’t want to name.

His phone buzzed with a new notification.

Cedric nudged him and smirked. “See? Told you. Ella’s texting you.”

More notifications popped up, one after another.

The others started laughing. “Knew she couldn’t hold out. Didn’t expect her to break so fast, though.”

David’s expression darkened. He tossed his phone onto the table. He didn’t care about the money. What got under his skin was knowing she’d gone shopping the second she left him. Unbelievable.

She’d spent three years glued to his side, always sweet and obedient. Now, it was like she’d grown claws overnight.

Cedric shook his head. “What’s up with Ella? Nails, hair, designer clothes… Is she trying to copy Jessa now?”

“Jessa’s the real deal in Rockford Bay,” another guy scoffed. “Ella’s just a country girl with no style. She can try all she wants, but she’ll never pull it off.”

“She’s an ugly duckling. No way she’ll ever be anything else,” someone else added.

They all laughed at her expense.

Suddenly, the energy in the club shifted. People started whispering, eyes drawn to one spot by the bar. Someone gasped, “Guys, look. She’s so hot.”
