David pressed his lips together, eyes cold. “Ella, get back here. Now.”
Ella let out a laugh. “You really think I’ll just come running because you told me to? We’re divorced, David. I don’t have to put up with you anymore.”
He gritted his teeth. “About the reason for the divorce. I’m giving you one more chance. Rewrite it.”
Her laughter only got bolder. “Did I get something wrong? You’ve been awake for six months, and you haven’t even held my hand once. You were in a coma for three years. Sure, you’re healthy now, but honestly, I have to wonder if your manhood survived. Maybe you should see a good doctor. My best divorce gift to you is wishing you a quick recovery… as a man.”
David was silent, a muscle twitching in his jaw.
He couldn’t believe how much she got under his skin.
“Ella, sooner or later, I’ll show you what I’m really capable of.”
“Sorry. You won’t get the chance.”
“Ella!”
There was nothing but silence on the line, then the call ended.
David could only stare at the phone, too furious for words.
Ella!
…
Ella was already at her best friend Fiona’s apartment. As soon as she hung up, Fiona burst out laughing and shot her a thumbs up. “That was epic. I bet he’s about to have a meltdown.”
Ella smiled, a little bitter. She figured it out. She’d spent so long loving him, always putting herself second, which just made him act superior.
You have to love yourself before you love anyone else.
As a woman, if you don’t put yourself first, no one else will.
Fiona plopped down next to her. “Remember three years ago, when Jessa ran off the second she heard David was in a coma? Now he wakes up and goes right back to her. Men like that? Not worth it.”
Ella peeled open a candy and let the sweetness melt on her tongue, hoping it would cover up the bitterness inside. “That’s the difference, Fiona.”
