David’s face went ice cold, his features hardening in an instant. Someone as proud as him had never been slapped before, not once in his entire life.
He stared at her, his eyes sharp and chilly. “Ella, you get to marry me when you feel like it and leave when you feel like it. What exactly do you take me for?”-
Ella let out a short laugh. “A toy.”
He blinked, stunned for a second.
She forced herself to keep talking, even though her heart was in pieces. “You’re just a toy I stole from Jessa. I got bored. Now I’m tossing you out.”
David’s expression darkened, almost stormy. “Alright, Ella. Fine. You want a divorce? Let’s do it. But don’t come running back to me, begging for another chance.”
He turned and stomped upstairs to his study, slamming the door so hard the whole house seemed to shake.
Ella felt every ounce of strength leave her body. She slid down the wall until she was curled up on the carpet, hugging her knees to her chest.
David, I can’t love you anymore.
…
The next morning came.
Marian quietly pushed open the study door and stepped inside.
David was already at his desk, buried in paperwork. He was always working.
“Sir,” Marian said softly.
He didn’t even bother looking up. The tension in the room was thick and icy.
Marian set a cup of coffee down near his hand. “Sir, your wife made this for you.”
David paused, the pen in his hand going still. Some of the anger seemed to slip from his face.
Was she trying to make up with him?
Honestly, Ella had always been a good wife. She cooked his favorite meals, washed his clothes by hand, and took care of everything he needed.
He picked up the cup and took a sip.
The taste was exactly how he liked it.
David’s face was dark, stormy. He glanced over the divorce agreement. Ella wasn’t asking for a single cent. She was leaving with nothing.
He let out a cold, humorless laugh. So she actually had that much pride. Not even a penny from him. Did she really think a girl from the countryside could just walk away and live on her own?
Three years ago, she’d done everything she could to marry him. Wasn’t it all for the money?
Then he spotted something that made him narrow his eyes. The reason for divorce, handwritten by Ella.
[The husband is physically incapable. He has sexual dysfunction and can’t meet his marital duties.]
David just stared at the page.
His face went even darker.
Ella!
He grabbed his phone and called Ella right away.
The call connected quickly. Her voice was clear and calm on the other end. “Hello?”
