Ella just wanted the awkwardness to disappear.
David looked down at her, his eyes dark and unreadable, lips curled in a faint, teasing smile. “Help me?” he said.
He’d been drugged. She was supposed to help him.
Ella’s cheeks flamed bright red. She shook her head quickly, waving her hands in front of her. “Not that kind of help. I meant… I can help you some other way.”
“Yeah?” David watched her scramble to explain, amusement flickering in his eyes. His voice was light, almost lazy. “What other way are you thinking?”
Ella couldn’t say a word. He was definitely doing this on purpose. He was teasing her, like a grown man playing with a girl who had no idea what she’d gotten herself into.
He was standing right in front of her, close enough that she could see every detail. He had those long legs in sharp suit pants and a narrow waist, cinched with an expensive black belt.
Ella tried so hard not to look down. She really did. But her face was right at that level, and her gaze kept flickering everywhere else.
Suddenly, his hand slid under her chin, gently lifting her face. He grinned, soft and amused. “Ella, what are you trying so hard not to look at?”
She’d just been peeking around his bedroom, now she was practically staring at him.
“I wasn’t looking at anything! I don’t care anymore, I’m leaving!” Ella tried to get up.
David didn’t let go. His hand stayed warm and steady on her cheek. “Why did they send you to the countryside back then?”
Ella’s lashes fluttered as she looked up at him.
“No one wanted you?” he asked quietly.
No one wanted you.
Those words went straight through her, leaving her raw and exposed. Her eyes turned glassy, the rims going red.
She felt so hurt. Hurt by the world for tossing her aside. Hurt by him, the one who once said he wanted her, then just… didn’t.
