Grandma Chelsea jumped in right away. “No, stay for dinner. You hardly ever make it up here. I’ve already asked the staff to start on the meal. Let’s all have a nice family dinner tonight.”

David nodded at Mike. “You should stay.”

With both of them inviting him, Mike chuckled. “Well, if you insist, I’d hate to be rude…”

Ella’s cool voice cut him off. “He’s not staying for dinner.”

Mike froze, glancing over at her.

She looked him straight in the eye. “You just got out of prison. From now on, don’t come back to the Harmon house.”

The room went quiet, tension thick in the air.

Grandma Chelsea turned to Mike, startled. “You were in prison?”

Ella’s face didn’t change. “Yes. Ten years.”

Grandma Chelsea stared in shock. “What happened? What did you do?”

Mike looked at Ella. “Mrs. Harmon, if you want to know what I did, you should ask Ella. She knows better than anyone.”

He tossed the question right back at her, clearly trying to see if she’d actually tell Grandma Chelsea and David the truth about why he went to prison.

Ella saw right through him and stayed silent.
