The Genius Ex-Wife’s Revenge Portfolio novel Chapter 84

David was being ridiculously generous. Mike hesitated for a second, then shrugged. “Whatever you say, Mr. Harmon.”

David asked, “Is a million enough?”

A million?

Mike’s eyes went wide. He honestly hadn’t expected David to toss out a number like that, just like it was nothing.

“That’s more than enough,” Mike said quickly.

David pulled out a checkbook and filled it in, then handed the check to Mike.

Mike stared at all the zeros. It really was a million. “Thank you, Mr. Harmon. I’ll get out of your way.”

He left with a grin, clutching the check like it was the best thing that had ever happened to him.

...

Back in the bedroom, Ella was already waiting.

She looked at David, her eyes sharp. “What did Mike want?”

David loosened the top button of his black shirt, showing off the edge of his collarbone. He gave her a half-smile. “What do you think he wanted?”

Ella frowned. “I’m serious. Tell me.”

He slipped off his fancy watch and set it on the cabinet. Seeing how tense she was, he raised his brow. “He didn’t say much. Just asked for money.”

Ella’s face fell. “And you gave it to him?”

“I did.”

“How much?”

“A million.”

David gave her a crooked, unreadable smile. He pulled her closer, his hand firm around her arm. “Ella, don’t act like you don’t care.”

Ella’s voice was calm. “David, if you can’t take responsibility for something, don’t ask about it. Don’t give people hope, and they won’t end up disappointed.”

She slid her arm out of his hand and walked away.

David was a good man, but he would never really be hers. Their marriage was temporary. He belonged to Jessa. No matter how much she wanted to lean on him, she knew she couldn’t, not for real.

Years ago, in that cave, he’d promised he would come back for her. He would never know how long she waited alone, day after day, hoping. But he never came.

All she got was Mike. The one person she didn’t want.

David never came for her.

...

In a nightclub’s fancy VIP room, Mike lounged on a sofa. He slapped the million-dollar check onto the coffee table and crossed his legs, grinning wide. “Bring me all your prettiest girls. Did you see this? I’ve got money.”
