He was calling her name.
Ella yanked at her hair, pulling it free with a sharp snap. Finally, she managed to untangle herself and sat up. “What’s it?”
David watched her, his eyes narrowed. “Did you do that on purpose?”
Only then did Ella realize something was off. While fumbling with her hair, she had somehow climbed right on top of him.
Now she was straddling him, her knees on either side of his waist. He was lying beneath her, looking up, and the awkwardness hit her all at once.
Her mind went completely blank. Instinctively, she squeezed her legs together.
David’s lean waist was right beneath her, and her long legs were hooked on either side of him. The sight was almost blinding, so close and so intimate.
As she tightened her grip, David’s eyes flared red with heat. The muscles under his silk pajamas went rigid, and he reached up, his hands landing on her waist. His voice was low and rough. “Let go.”
Ella’s cheeks turned pink, and her messy hair fell over her face. Her bright eyes looked up at him, wide and nervous, like a startled deer. “Let go of what?”
David swallowed hard. “Your legs. You’re holding on too tight.”
Ella didn’t say anything. She could feel how his body had changed beneath her. The air in the room felt thick, almost scorching, heavy with something she couldn’t name.
Right then, a phone started ringing, breaking the tension like a splash of cold water. David’s phone, sitting on the nightstand, lit up with a call.
Ella glanced over and saw the name “Jessa” flashing on the screen.
David was still lying there, pinned under her. He covered his eyes for a moment, looking both annoyed and unbearably handsome, then grabbed the phone and answered. “Jessa.”
“Okay, maybe next time.” Jessa said, her voice dropping with disappointment.
David hung up and glanced down at himself, frustration written all over his face. Every time he was near Ella, it got harder to stay in control. He didn’t even understand why. He knew he wasn’t supposed to like her, but his body never listened.
He walked into the bathroom next door and took a cold shower.
When he came back out, Aiden was already waiting for him. “Sir.”
David’s usual calm and cool attitude was back. He gave a quick order. “Look into Mike for me.”
Aiden looked up. “You mean Mrs. Harmon’s foster father?”
David nodded. “He spent ten years in prison. I want to know exactly why.”
