When Ella stepped out of the bathroom, David was already gone. He’d probably left because of a call from Jessa. Ella caught her reflection and gave herself a wry little smile.
Her phone started ringing just then. It was Rachel.
She picked up. “Hey, Ella,” Rachel said. “Jessa’s got a few friends over today. You should come hang out with us.”
That was suspicious. Since when was Rachel ever this friendly?
Still, Ella kept her tone light. “Sure. I’ll head over now.”
Fiona showed up in a rush as soon as she heard. “Ella, I don’t trust this. Rachel’s definitely up to something. Plus, Mike’s out of prison again. Do you really want to go to the Irvine house?”
Ella looked calm and steady. “I need to check something for myself.”
Fiona wasn’t convinced, so she decided to tag along.
When they got to the Irvine house, the place was buzzing. Jessa’s friends were all there, including Cedric and his usual group of rich kids.
Cedric spotted Ella and immediately frowned. “Ella, why are you here?”
Jessa jumped in with a smile. “I invited her, Cedric.”
Cedric scowled. “Why would you do that? We don’t want her around.”
Ella didn’t even flinch. She just blinked at Cedric, her lips curving into a playful, not-quite-smile. “Relax. I’m not exactly dying to hang out with rookies anyway.”
Cedric was left speechless. He was no rookie. He was the best. But the memory of their last gaming session—and his total defeat—made his face flush. He shot to his feet. “Ella, face me in a rematch.”
He needed to win, just once, to save his pride.
Ella watched it all with cool, unreadable eyes. Now she understood what Rachel and Jessa were plotting. They’d brought Mike here for a reason.
Mike shuffled toward her, arms open, as if he expected a warm welcome. “Ella, it’s me.”
Fiona stepped in front of Ella, blocking him. She glared and spat out, “Get away from her. Don’t lay a finger on Ella with those filthy hands.”
Mike stopped, putting on a meek, harmless act. “Ella, I’m your foster dad. I raised you in the country. Are you really cutting me off now? I know you’re living the good life since marrying into money. Are you embarrassed by me?”
Jessa piped up, trying to sound righteous. “Ella, that’s not right. He’s your foster father. You should take care of him now.”
Ella studied Mike. Beneath all that fake innocence, she caught a twisted little grin, like he was silently telling her she’d never get away from him.
Mike’s expression turned pitiful. “Ella, I shouldn’t have come. I shouldn’t make things hard for you. As long as you’re happy, that’s all I care about. I’ll just go back to the country now.”
