Mike turned to leave.
“Hold on,” Cedric called after him.
Mike paused.
Cedric’s glare shifted to Ella, his voice sharp and accusing. “Ella, what’s wrong with you? That’s your foster father. How can you just pretend he doesn’t exist?”
The other spoiled rich kids jumped in, their voices dripping with scorn. “So what if you come from nothing, Ella? We didn’t know you were this selfish and heartless. All you care about is money.”
“How did Mr. Harmon end up marrying someone like you? You’re just a stain on his name.”
The whole group was piling on, each word heavier than the last. Jessa, standing by Cedric’s side, wore a smug smile.
Fiona opened her mouth, but Ella caught her arm and held her back.
Just then, Rachel stepped forward, her face painted with fake concern. “Ella, you really shouldn’t do this. Mike is your foster father. You should take him home.”
Rachel and Jessa were sure Ella would never expose Mike’s dirty secrets. Most girls, when they’re hurt, just swallow the pain and keep quiet. Rachel’s plan was simple and cruel. She wanted Mike to haunt Ella forever, to trap her in a nightmare that never ended.
Ella’s eyes, clear and bright, locked onto Rachel. “You brought him here, didn’t you?”
Rachel stayed silent.
A bitter smile played on Ella’s lips, never reaching her eyes. “So you’ve known everything all along.”
Rachel had dumped her in the countryside and never looked back. For a while, Ella thought maybe Rachel just didn’t know. But now she was sure. Rachel knew exactly what had happened to her out there. She knew every awful detail.
