After Mike left, Jessa slipped her arm through Rachel’s and leaned in close. “Mom, what do you think Ella has on Mike? There’s got to be something.”
Rachel just smiled, almost amused. “Jessa, that’s not our problem to worry about. All you need to remember is that Ella’s no competition for you. She won’t last long. Soon enough, she’ll just be one of Mike’s playthings.”
Jessa couldn’t help but smirk. In her eyes, Ella was just some country girl, barely good enough for Mike. Who did she think she was, holding onto the title of Mrs. Harmon?
“You’re amazing, Mom,” Jessa said, her admiration obvious.
Rachel’s eyes sparkled at the praise. “Jessa, your father hasn’t been home the past few nights. Could you give him a call and ask him to come back? He always listens to you.”
Peter spoiled Jessa like she was royalty. He’d always listen to her.
Jessa nodded right away. “Sure, Mom. I’ll call him now. I’ll make sure he comes home tonight.”
She pulled out her phone and started dialing.
Rachel finally felt at ease. With Ella out of the picture, happiness was finally within reach.
...
Over at Harmon Corporation, David sat behind his desk in his office, the black leather chair fitting him perfectly. Today, his close friend Atlas had dropped by.
Atlas sipped his coffee and lounged against the edge of the desk, looking completely at home. “David, I actually came here for some advice.”
David barely looked up, signing off on documents as he spoke. He grinned. “Atlas, what could possibly trip you up? I’m almost impressed.”
Atlas raised an eyebrow. “Come on, David. Tell me how I’m supposed to win over Ella.”
He was totally serious about it.
David’s pen hovered in the air for a moment.
“David, you’ve spent more time around Ella than anyone. You know what she likes, what she’s into, what makes her happy. You’ve got the inside scoop. Help me out here.”
