“Cut the games. I want the hundred million delivered to me tonight. If not, your photo will be everywhere in Rockford Bay by morning. I’ll be waiting,” Mike snapped, then hung up.
Ella stood frozen, still gripping her phone, when she heard David’s voice from behind her.
“Were you on the phone with your foster dad?”
She turned to find David back in the room. His eyes landed on the box in her hands. He was so tall, his silhouette stretched across the floor between them.
“Grandma said your foster father sent you a photo. What kind of photo is it?”
Ella hesitated. Should she tell him what was going on with her foster father? And if she did, how would he react?
She started, “It’s a photo of—”
Her phone buzzed again. This time, Atlas' name flashed on the screen.
When she picked up, Atlas sounded way too excited. “Ella, come outside. I got you a present.”
She frowned. “Atlas, this really isn’t a good time—”
“I’m literally outside the Harmon house. If you don’t come out, I’m coming in.”
She gave in immediately. “Don’t. I’ll be right out.”
David watched her. “That was Atlas?”
Ella nodded. “Yeah. I’ll be back in a bit. We can talk about the photo then.”

Outside, she spotted Atlas' bright red sports car parked on the lawn. He climbed out, grinning, holding a fancy gift bag.
“Ella, this is for you,” Atlas said, holding it out.
