David watched the whole scene from the balcony. He saw Atlas hand Ella a limited-edition Chanel bag, and he saw her turn it down.
Ella looked at him. “Did you tell Atlas I like bags?”
David raised an eyebrow. “Wasn’t it true? I remember you used to like them.”
Ella’s lips curved into a faint, almost mocking smile. “Not really. I prefer things that cost even more, like diamond necklaces. Next time, tell Atlas to bring me one of those.”
David’s good looks took on a colder edge. The conversation fizzled out, both of them left with unspoken words.
He switched topics. “What photos did your foster father send you today?”
A moment ago, Ella had planned to tell him about the photo and what happened with Mike, but something in her changed. She just shrugged. “Just some old pictures from when I was a kid. Nothing important.”
David tried to press for more. “Your foster father—”
Ella cut him off. “Mr. Harmon, do you seriously have nothing better to do? If you’re so free, maybe you should spend your time figuring out how to have a baby.”
David’s mind flashed to her earlier jab about him not having enough stamina. His expression chilled. “How I have a baby has nothing to do with you. You don’t need to worry about it.”
With that, he walked straight out, not looking back.
Ella was left alone in the room. How David had a baby wasn’t her concern. That was Jessa’s problem, not hers.
Her face looked a little pale, but she quickly pulled herself together and left. She needed to find Mike.
…
Ella showed up at the nightclub. Mike had been partying there for days, drinking and spending money like there was no tomorrow.
Inside a luxury private room, Mike lounged on the sofa, arms wrapped around two gorgeous girls . They spotted Ella as soon as she walked in. “Hey, pretty girl, back again? You’re not here to cause trouble this time, are you?”
Mike looked at Ella’s fair, delicate face and grinned, obviously in a good mood. “Relax. She’s not here to stir up drama. She’s here to give me money.”
Ella didn’t even blink. “Enough. We had a deal. I give you the money, you give me the photo negative.”
Mike nodded toward a cabinet in the room. “It’s in that box over there.”
Ella walked over and opened the box. The negative was right where he said it would be.
In the very next second, something heavy smashed into the back of her neck. Pain exploded through her, and her vision faded to black. She slumped to the floor.
Mike walked over, still clutching the check, his eyes greedy as he looked down at her. “Ella, I’ll take the money. And I’ll take you too. From now on, you’re with me.”
Ella’s eyes closed, and darkness swallowed her whole.
…
David was in his study, going through paperwork, when Aiden rushed in. His voice was low and urgent. “Sir, we found out why Mrs. Harmon’s foster father, Mike, went to prison.”
