Henry
I decided to wait when Quirin and Kennedy went outside to greet Piper. I didn’t want to risk having her do a U-turn without even getting out of the car and leaving before I had a chance to see and speak to her.
I shoved my hands in my pockets, waiting just inside the door.
“Welcome back, Piper,” I hear my brother say to her.
close my eyes as her voice rolls over me, making me feel calm and alive all at once.
I feel the wind brush past me and open my eyes just in time to see Kaylee and Kendra rush outside, yelling for Piper. I guess Yorick wasn’t joking about me becoming the favorite uncle if I mated with Piper. The girls obviously adore her.
I’m not surprised. I already adore her too.
I follow the twins outside, and stop in the doorway as white hot desire flows through me. I’ve never felt desire Like this, never felt this bone-deep need before. But seeing Piper holding the twins, seeing the unfiltered look of happiness on her face as she hugs them, I know I want this. I want her. I want her holding OUR pups with her face shining with unrestrained happiness.I know the moment she catches my scent. Her entire body tenses and her eyes flash open.
The twins ake obviously concerned at Piper’s response to me, making sure that she knows who I am.
I say hello, and notice that she uses my title like a shield.
I’m surprised that she’s being polite until her friend blows past me with the same enthusiasm as the twins.
. I watch her say hello to her friend, her body remaining rigid. I know it’s because I’m here and she might be concerned that Justine is here as well: She doesn’t know that I’ve sent Justine home and intend to pursue her.
As she’s hugging her friend, I see the bruise. Tyrus snarls in my head, ready to kill whoever put that mark on our mate.
I hold on to him tightly, but I too want to know who marked our matets at Zack guy, Will Kill him.
She’s tries to brush past me, but I have to know, so I stop her, feeling the electric tingles that I’ve heard about my entire life, light up in my hand, sending another, different wave of desire through me. Goddess, she’s so fucking beautiful.
Her clipped responses are more civil than I expected, but / know how to handle her now. It doesn’t mean that I wont openly show her that I care about her, that I don’t like seeing her injured, but I also know that being lovey-dovey won’t work with my mate. At least not until our bond iscompleted. After that, hopefully, she’ll be like Quirin and crave the loving side of me the way he craves it from Kennedy.
I’m pleasantly surprised when she lets me stroke her cheek. I don’t miss the flush of her cheeks. She may be putting on a good front, but she’s as impacted as l am by the mate bond.
I watch her walk inside, then stroll over to Quirin.
“Well, that went better than I was expecting,” I say.
“I was hoping to see her punch you,” Quirin says, grinning.
Ismile. “I was ready for it.”
Suddenly, Kaylee and Kendra are between us, hands on hips.
“Piper is our friend, Uncle Henry,” Kaylee says.
“Yeah, why does she look mad at you,” Kendra says.
“Girls,” Kennedy begins, but I hold up a hand to stop her. I know how much these two are like Q. They’ve got their mother’s compassion, but they have his passion and his need to protect those he cares about. The fact that Piper falls into that category pleases me immensely.
I crouch down in front of them.
“Uncle Henry made a mistake and I hurt Piper.””Did you tell her you were sorry?” Kaylee asks.
“Not yet. She wouldn’t let me. You know how, when you get upset, you don’t want to listen to the person who upset you?”
