Chapter 103
Mia didn’t want to go. She had made it very clear the second Alex mentioned the boutique.
“No, Alex. I’m fine. I have dresses. Lots of them,” she lies, trying to protest. She doesn’t have shit.
Alex, of course,didn’t listen.
He wasn’t even listening at all.
He just gently took her hand, like always, and led her toward the luxurious glass-front boutique, the one she had only walked past and stared into, never dared to step inside.
Now, here she was. Inside.
She felt like she didn’t belong the moment the glass doors closed behind her.
The air smelled expensive, like roses and soft vanilla. The lights were glowing softly over rows and rows of elegant gowns, dresses, and heels that didn’t look like they were made for people who had bills to pay.
Mia stayed close to Alex, not touching anything. Her fingers curled nervously at her sides.
She was scared to breathe wrong, let alone touch a price tag. One clumsy move and she could knock over something worth more than her life as a Turner in this town.
Her voice was a whisper. “Alex, seriously. This place is too much.”
Alex glanced at her, then grinned like he didn’t hear her. “Relax. Just try on a few things.”
She stared at him. “Alex, did you see the mannequin by the window? That dress on it can pay my entire tuition fee.”
“That’s the point,” he said simply. “I want you to wear something special.”
She opened her mouth to argue again, but he had already turned to the saleswoman standing a few feet away.
“Can we get a few red dresses in her size?” he asked, and the woman nodded like she’d been expecting them all day.
Mia sighed and looked up at the ceiling, silently asking the universe how she got here. A few months ago, she was admiring this man from a distance. And now, he was dragging her into boutiques like this, talking like it was normal to pick a dress that cost thousands just for one night.
Ok the thought that she will be attending the infamous Unicorn party hasn’t settled yet.
She can’t imagine the look on her sisters and mother if they find out she will be attending the unicorn party they didn’t let her to breath wrongly About.
Life is funny,
Alex is right, she needs a dress for that night.
The first dress the saleswoman brought out was a deep velvet gown. It had a long slit up the side and off-shoulder sleeves. Mia stared at it like it was made of fire.
“Nope,” she said, backing away. “I’ll rip it just trying to walk.”
Alex chuckled. “Try it.”

“No.”
But he was already taking the hanger from the woman and holding it out. “Please.”
Mia looked between him and the dress, then grabbed it with a dramatic sigh. “If I tear this, I’m disappearing from this town.
Forever.”
Alex laughs and Mia pauses just to admire it. He looks like a totally different person.
Compared to the hard face and wicked smirk he used to have on all the time.
She slipped into the fitting room and changed.
When she stepped out, her face was already red. The dress hugged her body like it had been sewn on her. Too tight. Too much.
Alex’s eyes lifted, and for a second, he didn’t say anything. He just looked at her. Slowly. From top to bottom.
She crossed her arms over her chest, feeling awkward. “Don’t even say anything. I can’t breathe in this.”
Alex blinked and smirked. “Not my favorite. Next.”
The next dress was black and glittery. Too shiny.
Then came a gold one. Too loud.
Then a pale pink one. Too soft.
Dress after dress, she stepped in, tried, and stepped out. Her confidence slowly dropped with each one. They were all beautiful, yes. But none of them felt like her. None made her feel comfortable.
“I told you, Alex,” she mumbled, adjusting the strap of another gown. “This place isn’t for me. Let’s just go.”
But Alex only leaned back against the wall, arms crossed, watching her like he was studying art. “Not yet. There’s one more.”
Mia groaned as the saleswoman reappeared with a final dress.
It was red.
But not a loud red. Not a screaming red.
It was soft. Elegant. The color of ripe cherries. Sleeveless, with a gentle sweetheart neckline and a simple slit that stopped mid-thigh. It didn’t glitter. It didn’t scream for attention. It just… was.
Mia hesitated, fingers brushing the fabric. It felt different. Lighter.
She took it silently and disappeared into the changing room.
The second she zipped it up, something shifted.
She looked in the mirror and didn’t cringe this time. She blinked. Then blinked again.
It fits.
It wasn’t over-the-top. It didn’t feel like she was wearing someone else’s clothes. It felt like… her. But a little more grown, elegant. A little more beautiful.

Still, her heart beat fast as she stepped out.
Alex looked up. And this time, his eyes softened.
He didn’t smirk. He didn’t joke.
He just stared. “That’s the one.”
Mia felt her cheeks heat up. “You think so?”
Alex pushed off the wall and walked over, gently taking her hand and twirling her around slowly, like she was something delicate. When she faced him again, he was still holding her fingers.
“I know so,” he said quietly.
Mia looked down, smiling. “It’s… nice.”
“It’s perfect.”
She glanced up at him, trying to keep her voice light. “You know this dress costs a lot.”
“I can buy hundreds of this right now for you if you want” Alex says smirking
“Alex,” she groaned.
Alex laughs.
“I’m serious,” he said, stepping closer. “Okay, fine, let me buy just one for you…. For now” He adds smiling
She opened her mouth to argue again, but he placed a finger under her chin and tilted her head up.
“Mia,” he said gently. “You deserve to wear something that makes you feel like what you are-beautiful.”
Her throat tightened. She didn’t know what to say. She wanted to argue, but she also didn’t want to.
So she nodded. Just a little.
Alex smiled.
The saleswoman, standing to the side, took that as a yes and went to wrap it up.
Mia stepped back into the changing room, changing out of the red dress slowly. Her fingers lingered on the fabric, almost like it was something magical.
She didn’t know why her eyes were wet.
Maybe it was because for so long, she’d felt invisible. Like someone who could never belong in places like this. Or with someone like Alex.
And now, here she was, standing in a boutique too expensive to breathe in, trying on dresses for a party she still couldn’t believe she was attending-with the same boy she once watched from a distance and never dreamed would notice her.
She wiped her eyes before stepping back out.
Alex was waiting by the counter, credit card already out.

Mia walked over slowly, wrapping her arms around herself. “Thank you,” she said, quietly.
Alex glanced at her, then leaned down and kissed her forehead. “You’re welcome.”
Alex made her get shoes too and even two bags.
And just like that, it didn’t matter how much they cost.
What mattered was how he looked at her when she wore it. Like she was the most beautiful thing in the room.
