The Heir And The Servent Started From A Bet novel Chapter 139

Chapter 139

The hallway was quiet as the man led them down the narrow corridor of the ship, his boots echoing against the floor.

None of them spoke. She hugged herself as they walked.

The man finally stopped in front of a door and turned to them. Without saying anything, he pointed. Just a nod. His expression was blank, unreadable.

They stepped inside.

It wasn’t much-a plain room with three metal bunk beds lined against the walls. The beds looked surprisingly clean, with folded gray sheets and thin pillows resting at the top. In one corner, a stack of neatly folded clothes sat on a low shelf. A single lightbulb dangled from the ceiling.

Mia looked around silently. It wasn’t home. It wasn’t even close. But it was better than the metal floor they’d been sitting on for days.

“Thank you,” their mother said to the man.

He nodded once and left without a word, shutting the door behind him with a soft click.

Lily immediately jumped on the nearest bunk. “Fuck, I need sleep,” she mumbled, curling up on the thin mattress.

Their mother sighed. “We need to share the beds. Ethan will take one. The four of us will share the other two.”

Lily groaned, not even opening her eyes. “Great.”

“Lily,” their mom said with that tired voice that held more warning than anger, “you and Ann will share one. Mia and I will take the other.”

Lily opened one eye. “Mom, Ann snores.”

Ann shot her a glare from across the room. “You act like you don’t fart in your sleep.”

“Be grateful you even have a place to sleep,” their mom said sharply.

Lily huffed but said nothing more. She rolled onto her side, pulling the thin blanket over her head.

Mia slowly walked toward the bed she would be sharing with her mother. Her bones ached, her head felt too heavy for her shoulders, and her skin felt sticky from the hours of sweat.

She tugged at her shirt and made a face. “I need a bath first,” she muttered, sniffing her sleeve. Her nose wrinkled.

“Honestly, we all do,” Ann said, rubbing her arms and glancing down at her own clothes with distaste.

Lily dragged herself off the bed and moved toward the pile of folded clothes. “Let me see if there’s something halfway decent to change into,” she said, already looking through them

She held up a gray shirt and a pair of baggy black pants. “No way. It’s all men’s clothes.”

Ann leaned over to look. “I wonder who owns them.”

Mia didn’t want to think too hard about that.

“At least there’s something to change into,” Ethan said, letting out a long sigh as he dropped himself onto the last remaining

bed. The mattress squeaked under his weight, but he didn’t care. He laid flat on his back, staring at the ceiling.

Mia stayed standing for a while, just watching her family settle into the space.

No one had the energy to argue or cry anymore. They have all accepted what is happening, they had no other choice.

She moved slowly toward the stack of clothes, picking up a clean shirt and pants. They smelled faintly like detergent-at least they were clean.

She turned toward the small door in the corner of the room-probably a bathroom. At least she hoped so. She didn’t say anything to anyone. She just stepped inside and shut the door quietly behind her.

She turned on the tap, and cold water burst out. Mia didn’t flinch.

She stripped down and stepped under it, letting the cold water wash over her. Her skin broke into goosebumps immediately, but she didn’t care.

She needed this. She needed something to wash away everything she has been through in the last 22 hours.

She leaned against the wall, letting the water pour over her face.

She tries to hold it back, presses her lips together, she tries but couldn’t…

Her shoulders shook as silent sobs escaped her lips, muffled by the sound of water.

Everything was gone.

“Alex”

She whispers his name over and over again as she cries, begging the water to wash it all away.

Wash away the pain in her chest that can’t let her breathe properly.

Later that night, everyone had finally settled into their beds.

Nobody spoke for few minutes. It was quietness that held too many thoughts, too many regrets, too many what-ifs.

Everyone was lost in their own head

Mia lay beside her mom on the lower bunk bed, staring at the ceiling, her hands folded over her stomach. She didn’t even know what time it was anymore.

“Mom, do you think we should change our surname?” Ann’s voice came out low but clear, slicing through the silence.

The question hung there in the air. Mia turned slightly to glance in her sister’s direction but said nothing. She wanted to know the answer too.

A part of her had thought about it. Maybe it was childish, but maybe it would help. New place, new name, new beginning.

I mean she had thought about changing her name if she were to leave Willowcrest for school.

Ethan, who had been lying on his back with one hand over his forehead, spoke first. “I don’t think we really need to. Where we’re going, they won’t know us. They won’t care about our name or how we lived in Willowcrest.”

Ann wasn’t satisfied. “I think that name is a curse we need to get rid of”

There was a long pause before their mom responded. “I don’t think the name was really the problem,” she said, her voice soft, worn down. “It was all us.”

The words were simple, but they hit like a brick.

Even Mia had to close her eyes for a second.

Their mom took a deep breath.

“That’s why I want us not to repeat that lifestyle we lived in Willowcrest. I know I encouraged it, pushed you into it. I thought I was doing what was best, but I was wrong. I see that now.”

Lily, on the top bunk, groaned softly. “Mom, don’t go all emotional on us now.”

But their mom wasn’t fazed. She looked up at the underside of the bunk above her, her voice steady. “Which is why I want you all to find new dreams. Real ones. I’m serious about it. Lily and Ann, that dream of trying to get a rich man to marry you? Bury it, babies.”

Lily whined, her voice muffled by the pillow she’d buried her face in. “I still want to marry a rich man, Mom.”

Mia rolled her eyes.

“I know. And it’s okay to want comfort. It’s okay to want someone who can take care of you. But that shouldn’t be your whole identity, Lily. Do something meaningful with your life. When you have something of your own, you attract people who respect you, who see you for more than just your body.”

Lily didn’t reply, but she didn’t argue either.
