Chapter 144
Mia was sat in front of the computer, her hands shaking slightly, Ethan was standing quietly behind her like he always did when she really needed him.
The room felt too quiet, like it was holding its breath with her. She took in a deep breath, then another, before typing the university website into the search bar. Her fingers trembled as she clicked on the admissions list page.
She began scrolling slowly, her eyes darting through the long list of names. Everything felt blurry, not because she couldn’t see, but because her heart was pounding too loudly in her ears.
Then Ethan leaned forward, eyes wide. “Mia, there!” he whisper-yelled, pointing at the screen.
She froze. Her heart skipped a beat. And there it was. Her name-Mia Turner-clear and bold under Business and Management.
Mia just stared at it. Her throat tightened. Her chest rose and fell too fast. She couldn’t believe it. After everything, everything… she really got in.
She chuckles, staring at her name, remembering all the night she stayed up reading. The days she had to work while running to the back room to read because she was preparing for an exam.
It almost got her fired…
Or is it when they all laughed that a Turner wanted to go to school.
She really got in huh?
It suddenly hit her. All the emotions she’d been stuffing down, all the pain, the fear, the helplessness…
Tears streamed down her cheeks.
She covered her face with both hands and sobbed quietly into them. Not just because she was happy, but because it felt like something had cracked open inside her.
Ethan rubbed her back gently, his voice filled with warmth. “Congratulations, Mia,” he said, laughing softly.
She couldn’t speak. She just turned and hugged him tight
Inside their own hotel room, Mia was sitting on the bed with her legs folded together, hugging her knees slightly. Her back rested against the pillow, and she stared ahead at nothing in particular.
Her mind still hadn’t completely processed everything. Her brother, Ethan, sat on the small couch across from her.
“I’m really happy for you,” Ethan said, breaking the silence with a small smile tugging at his lips.
Mia turned to look at him, her lips curling into a warm smile. “Thank you.”
There was a small pause. Ethan leaned back against the couch and asked, “So, what now?”
Mia let out a soft breath, looking down at her lap. “I go to school?”
Ethan laughed, shaking his head a little. “I know that. But well… you need money.”

Chapter 144
Mia smirked,
“I do have money though. I just have to access it right now,” she replied.
Ethan gave her a curious stare. “We’re talking about college money here, Mia. I mean huge money. Not small change.”
“And I have huge money,” she said again, still smirking confidently.
Ethan raised his brows slightly, watching her now with interest. Mia’s tone wasn’t uncertain. It was confident. She knew what she was saying.
If her school sent her the student ID, she’d be able to access her savings account with that.
She knew there was money there. A lot.
All her years working at Casa. Late nights, back-to-back shifts, covering for coworkers just so she could save a little more. Her tips, her bonuses. Every single cent, she’d put away, barely touching it unless it was important.
And then there was the money Alex gave her. The one he left for that stupid, heartless bet. She didn’t want to think about that too much, but money was money. And he had sent her more after everything. For school, he had said.
She didn’t even know how much he had sent in total. She never checked.
She’d been so careful. Even when she wanted to spoil herself a little, she didn’t. She always stopped herself. She didn’t buy fancy clothes, didn’t go out, didn’t get the phone she wanted.
She told herself she had to be ready for school. She wanted to have a simple smooth ride through school.
So yes. She had money. Or at least, she hoped she had enough.
“Okay, okay,” Ethan said, grinning now. “That doesn’t mean I won’t still support you, though.”
Mia smiled warmly. She knew Ethan had money. Years of running drugs, doing dangerous things she didn’t even want to know about. But somehow, he was always crying about being broke.
“I won’t reject that help, Ethan,” Mia said, laughing a little. Her voice was light but full of emotion.
There was a soft knock on the door.
Mia stood up slowly and walked over to open it. It was Ann.
“Mom ordered food. Come and eat,” she said quickly, already turning to walk back to their room just beside theirs.
Mia glanced back at Ethan, who nodded. They stepped out together, locking their door behind them.
When they walked into the other room, the aroma of food hit them first..It smelled like fried rice and chicken.
The food was already served into five plates. Their mom stretched out two plates to them.
Mia took hers and walked over to sit down on the floor, her back resting against the edge of the bed.
Her mom was seated on the bed, her eyes watching Mia.
“Did you get in?” she asked quietly, her voice a bit unsure.
Mia looked up and smiled. It felt real now. It had sunk in.
