Chapter 147
“What’s your problem?” Mia barked, her voice slicing through the tension that had been building in the room since Lily opened her mouth.
Lily crossed her arms and didn’t flinch. “I’m just saying the truth, why are you mad?”
Mia let out a bitter laugh, not one of amusement, but frustration. “Shocker, Lily. I doubt you even know what the word truth means. Not you. Not you of all people.”
Lily’s face hardened. “What’s that supposed to mean?”
“That’s enough,” their mom said, her voice tired, her hand raised like she could press the pause button on the chaos unraveling in front of her.
But Lily wasn’t backing down. She never did. “I’m just saying what the rest of you can’t say because you don’t want to hurt her feelings.”
Their mom shook her head. “And it’s not your place, Lily.”
Lily rolled her eyes. “Mom, what are you saying? It is my place. It’s all our place. We are all in this mess and it’s because of her.”
“Not exactly true,” Ethan chimed in, leaning forward, his voice low but firm.
Lily turned to him with a glare. “Really? Are we going to pretend Mia getting together with his precious son didn’t tip him off? Are we going to pretend that wasn’t the final straw for Blackwell?”
Ann, who had been quiet for a while, nodded slowly. “Lily’s right though. Yeah, Blackwell wanted to kill us at first after the whole Jullian thing, but he spared us. In the end, it was Mia going to the unicorn party with his son, letting their faces get plastered on every screen in town. That was really it for him. That was the straw.”
Mia’s chest was heaving now, her heart pounding loud in her ears. “And you. and Lily were just saints in Willowcrest, right?” she snapped.
“Mia-” her mom started gently.
But Mia couldn’t stop now. “I was harassed all my life because of your fucking lifestyle. I hated my surname, hated it! Because everyone in Willowcrest believed Turners would drop their pants for even a drink with a rich man. That’s the rubbish life you all lived that tainted our name. Tainted me. So yes, I dated one man. Yes, I fell in love with one man. Just one!”
“Mia,” her mom called again, softly.
But Mia didn’t hear her. Not really. Her voice cracked, but she powered through. Her eyes were glassy with tears she refused to let fall. “Yes, this happened, and I’m sorry for how it turned out. But the only crime I committed was falling in love. Do I regret it? No. I hate how it affected us, and for that I’m sorry. But let’s not pretend like we had some magical, good life in Willowcrest. We were hiding. We were threatened. Harassed. Thrown in police cells like animals at every given chance.”
The room was still. The weight of her words hung in the air, heavy and undeniable.
Ann let out a slow sigh, brushing her hair behind her ear. “Can’t believe I’m agreeing with Mia on this… but honestly, I think we should call it a blessing in disguise. We were going to get murdered sooner or later in that town. We did live a horrible life in Willowcrest.”
Their mom stood quietly, then looked around the room. Her shoulders slumped, her eyes filled with the kind of pain that

only comes after years of failing the people you love. She swallowed and stepped forward just a bit.
“Guys,” she said softly, her voice trembling just a little, “please… let’s let go of the past and start over. I want to see you all become better.”
No one responded, but the silence was different now. Not angry. Just… tired.
They all nod
“I’m going to be opening a tattoo shop,” Ethan says, obviously trying to change the topic and the atmosphere.
Everyone turn to look at him like he just dropped a bomb in the middle of their already emotional evening. It wasn’t the kind of announcement they expected, not from Ethan, not now. For a second, no one knows what to say.
Their mom slowly takes her seat.
“I’ve been saving towards it,” he adds, eyes darting between them. “Main reason why I kept going with the drugs selling. Yes, I was planning to leave the whole drug shit once I saved enough.”
He lets out a short laugh, dry and a little shaky. “Blackwell had to go to the extreme to make me understand I was ready. It’s time.”
They all stare, stunned.
Ethan had always been that unpredictable mix-the guy who drew amazing tattoos in his sketchbook but still chose the
streets.
They believed he would never leave that life…… well…
“Well, this actually shocked me,” Ann says, her eyebrows raised, voice soft with disbelief.
“Me too,” Lily adds, mouth slightly open.
Ethan offers them a small smile, the kind that looks unsure, almost like he’s waiting for someone to laugh at him, to shoot him down.
“I’m glad, Ethan,” Their mom says with a proud smile, one hand on his shoulder. She gives him a light squeeze, and it seems to ease something heavy inside him.
Then she turns to face the rest of them. Her voice gets quieter but stronger, like she’s trying to reach their hearts.
“Can we all just forget the past, the grudges… and promise to make ourselves and our lives better?”
It’s not just a question. It’s a plea.
“Promise, Mom,” Ann says first, quick and sure.
“Promise,” Ethan echoes.
“Promise,” Lily says a beat later, her voice carrying a hint of vulnerability that wasn’t there before.
Then all eyes turn to Mia.
She hesitates, swallowing hard. Her chest rises and falls slowly, as if she’s holding in all the pain and guilt she hasn’t allowed herself to fully feel until now. She looks at each of them. Her siblings. Her mother.

She lets out a breath.
“I’m sorry for my contributions to what happened,” she begins, her voice calm but trembling slightly. “I promise not to do anything to hurt any of you again…. and yeah, I promise.”
Their mom’s face lights up, soft and emotional. She places a hand over her heart and says, “Group hug.”
The reaction from her children is instant.
