Chapter 150
Waiting for the test results has to be the most excruciating moment she has had to go through.
Her legs were bouncing up and down like they had a mind of their own… They probably did right now.
Her hands were cold and sweaty, and her fingers kept fidgeting with the edge of her blouse.
She tried to keep her breathing steady, but every time she took in air, her chest tightened like it didn’t want to let go.
Her mom that was sitting right next to her, holds her hand, squeezing it every few seconds like that alone could stop Mia from falling apart.
But it wasn’t helping. Not all. Not right now. Not while waiting for results that could change everything.
She kept her head low, staring at the white tiles of the hospital floor. She started counting the tiny black dots in the design because anything…anything to distract herself…..
Doing anything was better than thinking about what was coming.
Her nerves were eating her up from the inside. Her stomach had been twisted into knots since they arrived. Her hands trembled, and she couldn’t make it stop.
This can’t happen to her.
Please, she pleads silently, to God, to fate, to whoever was listening.
Please just let this be a scare. Let this be one of those delays that come and go. Let it be stress, poor eating, anything else.
She closed her eyes and tried to push back the tears building behind them.
Her thoughts raced.
She wants to move on from everything that has to do with Willowcrest.
She wanted to start over. She was starting over. Her dreams were finally within reach. She had a future. She was going to make something of herself.
This couldn’t be happening.
Alex. The name drifted into her mind before she could stop it. She bit down on her bottom lip hard, trying to push him out. But his face was there.
He was probably married to Zoe by now.
It was better this way. As much as she wants nothing but to be with the love of her life, she knows she won’t forgive herself if something were to happen to her family because she fought to be with Alex.
It ended for them, not how she wanted though, but she has no choice but to accept.
Their lives together? Over. Done.
That’s why this can’t happen right now
Nothing, absolutely nothing should ever connect them again.

“Mia.”
Her mom’s voice broke softly through the buzzing in her ears.
Mia looked up at her. Her mom gave her a small smile, though worry was written all over her face.
*Relax?” she said gently, brushing a thumb across the back of Mia’s hand.
Relax.
Mia wanted to. God, she wanted to. But her body wasn’t listening. Her heart kept pounding. Her legs wouldn’t stop moving. Her throat was dry, and it felt like her insides were tied in tight ropes.
Still, she nodded. That’s all she could do.
She leaned back into the chair, trying to steady herself, to slow everything down. Maybe if she pretended to be calm, her mind would follow. Maybe she could fool herself just long enough.
But when the doctor walked in, all of that went out the window.
Mia wasn’t sure if she was breathing anymore.
The room suddenly felt smaller, too white, too bright.
The fluorescent lights above made her head spin.
Her ears rang, like her body was trying to protect her from what was coming.
The doctor held a chart in her hand, and she was smiling.
Why was she smiling?
