Chapter 155
The small opening party was in motion. The music played low, not too loud to be distracting, but loud enough to keep the
energy up.
There were people in suits, glasses of wine in hand, standing, talking and laughing. Waiters moved around with trays of drinks and tiny bites of food. There were fresh flowers on every table, and the room smelled like his new beginnings.
Alex stood near the entrance, his eyes scanning the crowd slowly.
He had just launched his first game. After days of sleepless nights, arguments, changes, breakdowns, and breakthroughs, it was finally here. His name was on it. His sweat, his ideas, his fight. Not his father’s. His.
The room was buzzing. People showed up. Investors, clients, some from the media, developers, friends of friends. Some familiar faces, others completely new. Some had known him when he worked under his father.
Some only knew his name, the prodigy turned rebel who broke off and started his own company.
They were here. They showed up.
He had already signed a few contracts worth billions. And there were more waiting on his desk, needing only a signature. But this party wasn’t just about celebrating those. It was about the fact that he did this…. on his own.
It was a new start for him. A new beginning. He was just starting.
He moved through the room, smiling, nodding, saying thank you, shaking hands, taking compliments with a polite grin.
Every single person who had shown up tonight meant something. They had taken a chance on him. And that mattered.
Even if some of them just wanted to be close to success. To money. That part never really changed.
He caught bits of conversations.
“That guy? He’s the one who designed the whole gaming engine…”
“He broke off from a billion dollar empire to start from scratch? Impressive”
“If his next launch goes as planned, this company might just be the biggest thing in tech…”
He tuned it out. Praise had never made him feel full. Not even as a child. Not when he built his first code at twelve and hid it. Not when his father paraded him around like a trophy.
He took a glass from a passing waiter, not to drink, just to hold something in his hand.
He was halfway through the crowd when he heard a soft voice.
“Hi.”
Alex turned. A girl in a soft blue dress stood there, smiling up at him. Her hair was neatly pulled back, and there was something gentle in her eyes, something open. Too open.
“Hi,” he replied with a quick smile. He didn’t stop walking. Just polite enough to acknowledge.
“Congratulations,” she said.
He paused, nodded once. “Thank you,” he said, already shifting his body slightly, ready to walk away.

“My name is Kassey,” she said, stepping forward just a little.
Alex turned fully this time. He knew exactly where this was going. He had seen this scene too many times before. Someone soft-spoken, sweet-smelling, pretty. Starting with congratulations, moving to compliments, then numbers exchanged, and by morning, he’d regret the whole thing.
He didn’t have the time. And more importantly, he didn’t have the heart.
“Nice to meet you, Kassey,” he said, his voice calm, polite. Then, before she could say more, he added, “Now if you’ll excuse me,” and walked away without waiting for a reply.
He didn’t turn back.
His mind was already tired. The last thing he wanted was another woman in his life. Not tonight. Not ever.
He didn’t trust them. Maybe he never would again. Maybe that made him a hypocrite. After all, he had his own share of mistakes. His own past. But still, something inside him had shut down, and he didn’t think it could be turned back on.
He kept walking, through the crowd, through the praise.
Maybe he was just pretending well. Maybe that was all life really was.
Pretending.
And right now, he had to pretend like his heart wasn’t burning.
Maybe he was a hypocrite.
Maybe..
Everything was ready. Mia was leaving for school tomorrow.
Her bags were packed and lined up near the door. Clothes folded, documents sorted.
It didn’t feel real yet.
She has been waiting for this moment for so long, a chance to start over, to begin again in a place where no one knew her
story.
A place where no one whispered behind her back, where the past didn’t follow her like a shadow.
It didn’t exactly happen how she thought for years. Firstly she was no longer in Willowcrest.
She was supposed to be running from Willowcrest, from her name, from her family.
But things changed, a lot changed.
But still…….
She is going to school.
And the best part? Ethan was going with her.
That alone had taken away most of her fears.

Eighty percent, she would say.
Having her brother by her side felt like everything will be fine.
They were getting an apartment near campus. They haven’t seen it in person yet, but the pictures looked nice. Mia just hoped it looked like that in real life.
They have not paid for it yet though. Just held a spot. If it didn’t work out, they would look for something else, but the idea of starting that stressful hunt all over again made her stomach twist.
Still, Mia was happy.
Genuinely happy.
She was scared too, sure.
There were moments when she woke up in the middle of the night, hand on her stomach, heart racing. But she reminded herself every day that she was strong. That she could pull through. She had to.
She has made her choice.
She was going to keep the baby.
And she was going to school. Both.
No one believes she can do both, but she would prove them wrong.
In a few months, she will start shopping for baby clothes. She smiled thinking about it.
Would it be a boy or a girl?
Would they have her nose? Her curls? Or would they come out looking like their father-
Mia shut her eyes quickly and shook her head.
No. Don’t go there.
Don’t think about him.
She has told herself this a thousand times.
He was the past. Whatever they had, if they even had anything.
He has moved on, married even. She had no place in his world anymore, and she didn’t want to be connected to him. Not even through a memory.
She sighed deeply, her hands resting over her stomach.
Then a voice behind her made her jump.
“What are you smiling about?”
She turned quickly.
“Ann!” she hissed, clutching her chest. “What the hell?”

Ann burst into laughter.
“Sorry,” she said between giggles.
Mia rolled her eyes, trying to slow her heart down. She had been sitting outside the house on the bench, taking in some air. The soft breeze had been helping until Ann startled her.
